People who already voted: Please revote in this poll, taking into account that two new entries have been added. Sorry for the trouble. Here are the instructions repeated again:

The original "Trompe Le Monde" contest description is found here.

Instructions for Voting

1. Don't vote until you've seen all the screenshots. If you don't see all nine here as reply posts, it means I'm still uploading them. If you have problems viewing any screenshot, post about it here and we'll sort it out.

2. Vote for all nine entries in the poll. Don't vote for some and leave others blank. That creates problems.

3. If you are on the Caravel team or have seen what the real JtRH looks like, please abstain from voting.

4. You are voting on how well each screenshot approaches what an actual screenshot of DROD: Journey to Rooted Hold will look like. Since you haven't actually seen JtRH (rule 3), you just have to compare entries to some guess of yours. A lowest rating of 1 indicates that not only are you not fooled, but you think the author has never even played DROD before and created his screenshot based on a viewing of Ralph Bakshi's Wizards. A highest rating of 10 indicates that you are absolutely certain this is a screenshot from JtRH and willing to fight anybody who says different. (Remember, we might actually have real screenshots from JtRH in the line-up.) A middle rating of 5 indicates that maybe if you were drunk, the lighting was bad, or preoccupied with feeding a baby, you might think the screenshot was real.

5. Authors vote your entries as 10. You gotta.

6. Don't talk about the entries until the poll closes and votes are counted. It is also suggested that you don't speculate on what features will be in JtRH while the poll is open in a way that might cause an entry to suddenly be seen as less realistic.

I expect a lot of people will get less than 5 ratings because it is pretty hard to make a convincing screenshot. A low rating doesn't necessarily mean people didn't like your screenshot--it just wasn't rated as being very realistic.

Stand-by for the entries and also I'm going to make a second "Which ones are real" poll in another post.

-Erik

I decided not to put Fafnir's and Slug's entries into the second "what is real" poll because it will be too obvious that they aren't real JtRH screenshots. Says Fafnir, "I coulda been a contender!" Well, Slug and Faf, I'll make a little side pot for you two. If your entry gets a 6 average rating, I'll give you 10 rank points. 7 rating gets you 20 rank. 8 gets 40. 9 gets 80. 10 gets 160.

If there's any bright side to my mistakes, it's that now we get have the poll in proper rating form, making full use of Schik's ingenuity.

For you modem users, or if you're just too lazy to download all the entries separately, I saved the huge BMPs as .jpeg and crammed all the entries into a single zip file, attached to this post. Enjoy.

I find the poll a little off-kilter, actually. I felt a few were really well done, and wanted to vote high for picture quality or humour value, but they weren't very realistic and so I was forced to vote them low. I think there should be another poll asking which was the most entertaining/impressive, with its own set of mod point rewards.

I tried to take the 'may think it is real while drunk' comment liberally so I wouldn't just be giving 1s. But yes, an 'entertainment value' option would have been nice.

Well, I can't offer mod point rewards on the same scale as an official tourny, but if no one beats me to it, I'll post such a poll after this poll closes (because I want to allow discussion on that poll).

Since I may not be around for the ending of the contest, I'll give my comments now...

Entry #1 - The squares were 14x14, the interface was the exact same, and I didn't understand the concept of the potion. I ranked it low.

Entry #2 - Admittadly, this one was mine, and it was done very quickly and very poorly by my standards. If it makes top 3, I will be beyond suprised.

Entry #3 - :( A lot more effort could have been put into this one.

Entry #4 - Very interesting...However, there are no shadows on the trapdoors, and you can tell the Beethro was simply flipped by the fact that light is shining on his left cheek, which is the opposite direction of the light. Oops!

Entry 5 - Tisk Tisk Tisk...Didn't the forum mention at one point that DROD would use the Quake engine? ;)

Entry 6 - As interesting as it was, I was able to tell that all they did was create a custom mod for the normal AE. As cool as it looks, all of the graphics are still 14x14, leaving it to be a fake screen.

Entry 7 - Odds are, this is the real one. Knowing everyone was hyping over hearing there may be a screenshot of JtRH, Erik decided to keep his tradition of not revealing any information. Nice prank!

Entry 8 - All they did was mod a snake and a wraithwing. Not visually stimulating, either.

Entry 9 - When I first saw this one, two thoughts crossed my mind, both of which contradicted each other. At first, I was impressed by the amount of detail that went into the drawing, but I also saw the inaccuracy and all the faults almost right away. The squares are something stupid like 18x18, the graphics are very blurry, and it steers away from the "Top-down" view. This will, odds are, be the one that wins though..

FYI, I didn't actually mod a wraithwing to get the phoenix. At least now I understand why I got low ranking!

Here are my comments:

Entry 1: The effect of the potion was presumably intended to be to make all the monsters semi-invisible. That being the case, why didn't it work on the roach? And why were the tar lines so irregular at the corners?

Entry 2: Quite well done, but the switching of level numbers for level titles and the glowing blue sword give it away.

Entry 3: I think not.

Entry 4: This one had potential, but the colour of the trapdoors and level title gave it away.

Entry 5: If there had been a vote for best screenshot (as opposed to most realistic) I'd have voted this one highly.

Entry 6: This pretty much matches all my hopes of what JtRH will be. The only worrying thing is the level heading - goblins on level six? According to the boards, the first wave of beta testers was composed of people who have never played DROD before, so I'd imagine they'd be relegated to level ten at the lowest.

Entry 7: I agree with gamer_extreme on this one, but if that is the only real screenshot, the developers are truly evil!

Entry 8: Self-evidently the best entry, you Philistines! :)

Entry 9: Extremely well-done visually, but let down by the undo buttons (which according to the forums won't be in the game) and the presence of brains and snakes (and a new type of roach) on level three!

Picture 1: Too simple, only potion color changed and It's not too useful potion either... It encourages you to hide walls in tar.

Picture 2: This was quite nice but the font doesn't look very good and it doesn't entirely match my guesses about JtRH.

Picture 3: This must've been done in 2 minutes. Can't give it a high rating.

Picture 4: I didn't like the color of those trapdoors and there's a different colored trapdoor under the upper left tar ;)

Picture 5: I would have given this a higher rating if the imp wasn't there. A big roach or something could do the job.

Picture 6: My picture :) I could've done better but I was too lazy. I'll be posting the styletiles in the development board in a while.

Picture 7: If this is a fake it's well done. But it's the most obvious picture for a real one.

Picture 8: Too similar to current version. Only 3 changes made...

Picture 9: I really liked this picture. After voting, I examined it more carefully and found a few mistakes but this is still the best picture in my opinion.

Okay, I did number 5. And I was going to put a roach there, but after censoring out two other imps, I couldnt be bothered to do that big one and put a roach in there instead.

Actually, there is an Undo button...right now you simply press Backspace as default. It's only supposed to work for one move (I think; the devs get to undo as much as we want in order to test better) and you can't undo a death. But you can undo that sinking feeling you get when you forgot to rotate before moving and hit that orb and now you know you have to start over...

Game on,
