Then what I want to happen is that the easternmost Wanderer moves, but the other one on the east has to wait a turn because it moves before the one stepping on the plate.

If I can get this set up, it should get me through the room. The problem is, I can't figure out how to set it up. Or am I on the wrong track entirely?

The idea is correct.

What's worth noting is that SW wanderer moves before all others, while NW one moves after all but the eastermost one.
