Many of you have now seen
skell's Official DROD Ideas Generator (inspired by earlier generators by calamarain). The generator contains a database of all the elements in DROD 5.0 and over 200 interactions, and allows you to roll a random selection in each of the categories "
Use (element)"
, "
Do not use (element)"
, "
Include (interaction)"
and "
Force player to avoid (interaction)"
. The generator also includes a selection of concepts (more general ideas for the type of room, such as movement restriction, slashfest, race against time...) and each roll has a 20% chance of including one of these.
Last night, a group of us watched gamer_extreme_101 and skell test-run the generator as follows: in each of five "
rounds"
, gamer rolled the generator and both had 20 minutes to build a room using the suggestion. It was a great success
though naturally, for the contest, the rules will be somewhat different.
In particular, although several people suggested running a contest where everyone is given the same suggestions -- and that would indeed be an interesting contest, and someone may run it in the future -- for this contest, I want to give everyone their own rolls so that we get a lot of variety.
Rules
1. If you wish to take part, post in this topic. I will then roll the generator for you
five times and send you a PM with links to your rolls.
2. Build one or more rooms using the suggestions. For each room, you must choose one of the five rolls -- you may not mix and match suggestions between the rolls.
3. It is not absolutely required that you satisfy all the conditions in your chosen roll. You may get contradictory conditions (such as "
Don't use Stalwart"
and "
Use this interaction: Stalwart kills Roach"
). In that case, you may find a clever way of meeting the spirit of the suggestion rather than the letter (use a Soldier instead of a Stalwart...) or you may simply ignore one of the contradictory conditions. You may roll five conditions and get an idea for a more interesting puzzle meeting only four of them.
4. You
must include in your room one or more scrolls behind a green door stating all the conditions in your roll, even if you did not meet all of them. (If your conditions included "
Don't use Scroll"
or "
Don't use Green door"
, these are considered to apply only to the rest of the room, not including the scrolls and door mandated by this rule.)
5. Include one or more empty rooms adjacent to your room, indicating from where you intend it to be possible to enter. Adjacent rooms may contain walls, floor and force arrows only. (For example, you may have three entrances on one side, and an adjacent room making it possible to exit your main room at A and return at B, but use walls to make C inaccessible.) Be careful of backtracking issues -- it must at all times be possible to solve the room without exiting normal play and using Restore.
6. You may build any number of rooms (including the possibility of multiple rooms based on the same roll). All rooms submitted will be included in the compilation hold (if valid and solvable). However, if you submit more than three puzzle rooms, you
must choose three to be included in the voting.
7. No custom media.
8. All rooms must be solvable from at least one reachable entrance, and if you include any challenges, they must be possible to complete.
9. Your rooms must be playable in build 6060.
10. The deadline for entries is
7pm GMT, 14 March 2015. After this date I will put all entries into a compilation hold and open voting on 16 March. Voting will remain open for two weeks.
