I know that there already rainbow and firebolts, but can you use them in TSS? If so, then how?

Yes, you can use them. Just go to the "Drod 5 - The Second Sky" installation folder, then go through the "Data" folder and finally open the "Bitmaps" folder.

Just copy-paste the bolts.jpg image into this folder and it'll automatically show up in-game. If you want to go back to the default bolts, just delete this image file.

Thanks. Now I am experimenting with the bolt designs, but I keep getting grey squares. Any tips?

Haven't done this myself, but .jpg seems like a bad idea because it'll introduce gradients into the image and the grey pixels need to be exactly #C0C0C0 (192, 192, 192) to be rendered transparent. If you're using JPEGs, switch to PNGs and see if they work better. (And don't start from a JPEG, because the data loss will have already occurred.)
