I can't come up with any useful configuration for this room. I can make the outer ring be slowly destroyed by the spikes, but I see no way to reproduce the pattern in the center: the entire blob quickly starts falling apart, usually leaving some 2x2-s.
Any hints?

This is the first room to have me completely stumped, I hope whichever supervillain came up with this is happy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you need to create tar babies to hit the switches as you run around the outer path, or else you can't get through 3/4 of the doors. I've tried creating a fortress of tar around the middle switches but I can't find a way that keeps enough babies alive, or doesn't have holes in it. I've also tried cutting a slow-burning fuse of tar that spirals around the spikes but I can't get it to give me enough babies to hit switches at the right times.

Am I on the right track with either of my setups? Do I need to try something else? Does anybody want to paint me a pretty picture of the tar Mona Lisa I need to carve to beat this room?

I don't quite understand it, even from looking at the secret room. I don't understand what "2x2 squares attached by the corners" look like.

What I found helpful for this room was to work out a stable tar configuration that would allow the tar baby to do its thing in the editor. Once I had the solution worked out, it was just a matter of getting the tar into that configuration. There is more than one configuration that will work, but the one Fang suggests is probably the easiest to create.

So here's what I've come up with so far in the editor (attached as a jpg file), but I'm pretty sure that's not possible to actually implement in the room, since the solution needs to include an opening to let you get in and clear at least one inner tar tile, right? (I guess that opening needs to be in the lower left, since the surviving tar baby won't need to return to the leftmost trigger?)

I think some of why I'm having such trouble wrapping my head around this one is that there are so many variables and a big gap between coming up with a hypothesis and seeing if it's feasible. So I'm posting here instead of just going ahead and trying more things out.

(Also, there's just no way the hint I quoted two comments earlier is correct, right? That would imply that no tar ends up on the outer ring of spikes at all.)

That's close, but you don't need to completely block the tar baby in; you just need enough tar to keep it in the center while you move around it.
