Return to Dugan's Dungeon, 3N 1E (0)

I think I'm starting this room correctly. I hit the orb from the SE & step SE. From this position, I eventually must move S which results in my getting killed sooner or later. I have tried hitting the orb from every other position & the SE seems to be the only tenable position. I have my sword facing NW. A hint please!
