I've recently bought an android phone and now I am unsuccessfully trying to find a couple of games to have something to play. The problem is the dozen or so of games I've tried so far was terrible in one or more aspects which made them unplayable to me.

The type of games I am most fond of is:
- Puzzle and Logic, especially Nikoli-style games
- Tactical games
- RPGs

The games can be either free or paid. So, folks of Caravel, can you please drop your suggestions? Feel free to suggest multiple games!

I don't have an Android myself, but I'd like to recommend Mole Miner. It's a rocks-and-diamonds puzzle game that's based on the Repton branch of the family, so it has fewer types of object and greater emphasis on logical puzzle solving than many similar games (though it certainly does have some new objects that give it its own unique flavour). I designed fifteen of the levels that come with the game and thrice fifteen available as add-ons :)

The Curse was awesome. Also Cogs was fine but too easy.

For a laugh Akinator. Not much point to it, but you play twenty questions with your phone.

Simon Tatham's Puzzles - Free:
For Nikoli-style games, I can't really imagine a more fitting app. Simon Tatham (The PuTTy guy) wrote implementations of many different generic logic puzzles. Each has a puzzle generator for "unlimited" levels. 34 of them were ported to Android by Chris Boyle. This is one of the first things I ever put on my Android phone, and it has followed me ever since.

Pixel Dungeon - Free:
This is a great rogue-like made for small touch screens. 4 (later 12) different character classes and 20+ levels. Intuitive controls and interesting game play.

Space Team - Free:
Have 1 - 3 friends with Android/iOS phone(s)/tablet(s)? If so, get this! Each member of your ad hoc space team gets a randomly generated control panel, and a series of instructions. The trick is that you probably won't have the controls requested, you'll have to tell your friends. Of course, they will have their own list as well. ;) Good Luck!

Bad Piggies - Free:
It's Angry Birds for engineers. You get to build crazy contraptions to move your pig through various obstacles and reach the ending. I never bothered finishing it, but I had some fun with it for a while. For free, you can't really go wrong though.

Also, Amazon gives out a free app every day, but it requires you to install their side-loaded app store. Here is the link, but there isn't anything fun today (in my opinion). Usually, you don't get anything that great, but I have gotten quite a few wonderful gems there,

I spend most of my droid time in Simon Tatham's or Patience Revisited. Robozzle, Meteor Blitz, and Alchemy are cool too.

I like the idea (I am a very big fan of boulder dash games) but I am afraid the execution is lacking for me, including controls (although "QAOP" style works almost well).

The Curse was awesome. Also Cogs was fine but too easy.
I'll look at them one of these days, they seem interesting, thanks :)

Can you chose 2 or 3 best from the list?

Akinator
I've had my fair deal with Akinator. Do you know that there is Beethro and 39th Slayer there?

Simon Tatham's Puzzles - Free:
It's beyond awesome.

Pixel Dungeon - Free:
This is even better!

Space Team - Free:
Nope, no friends :(.

Bad Piggies - Free:
Interesting so far but there is something about this games that makes me keep my distance and not start liking it too soon.

Dischorran's games
I'll look at them later today :).

I've been playing the Gurk series currently and I find it quite enjoyable. The plot isn't terribly exciting and the controls take some getting used to, but the gameplay is fine enough. Part I is free and part II and III are fairly cheap, too.

Here's a short browser demo of the engine: http://pents90.github.io/eburp/

You should check out The Room.

It's full of awesomeness, worth the price.
Can't wait for the second chapter!

EDIT: This game was on the robin's list.

I want to recommend this game anyway :)

Besides some of the games that have already been mentioned (The Rooms and Cogs were fun for me), I would like to add some of my favourite Android games to the list:

- Space Chem: Chemistry. In space. Puzzle game about programming machines that perform "chemical reations". It has a demo.

- Gemini Rue is a very good point and click game that has been recently released on Android.

- For something... different, try Little Inferno.

- World of Goo is a puzzle-physics game about building structures. It's much more fun than what that sounds like. I should never get into advertising. It also has a demo

- Anodyne is an Zelda-esque RPG-like game.

- For a REALLY HARD arcade game: Super Hexagon

- The Cut the rope series are fun and somewhat puzzly, but a tad easy.

Thanks for some really good recommendations here.

Picked up Curse and Simon Tantham today and they both seem very fun.

I second the Cogs recommendation (but it sure wasn't easy for me).
World of Goo is also really cool, though I only played it on PC 5 years ago or so, seems like it would be very cool on a phone or tablet.

Unfortunately the developer didn't think it through and the game is unplayable on mobile phones, it pretty much requires a tablet.

I agree with you about the lack of depth in Android games in
general: but the Quell series by Fallen Tree Games
is an honorable exception: it should really appeal to DROD lovers.

The blue raindrop is "you" and the gold pearls are your targets. The other items in play have special behaviors,
and as the series progresses these become quite exotic.

There are three games: Quell, Quell Reflect and Quell Memento,
which evolve the puzzle engine in complexity not unlike the
evolution of DROD. The mechnics are turn-based block sliding
with under-stated, gentle animations on an approx 12x25 grid.

And just so you're prepared .... no undo, buddy. Most solutions
are less than a couple of dozen moves, so this fits the
minimalist design philosophy.

Here's a Youtube review
Quell reflect for Android

And here's a thoughtful article on level design by the creators:
Quell level design philosophy

Quell also subscribes to the DROD-like notion of "good enough to
proceed", versus "perfection".

Here's a good solution walkthrough for Quell Memento: some of these levels approach DROD-like toughness!

Hey, Why don't you try out downloading games from play store app? A few days ago one of my brothers had a CD key of Video Game from Instant-gaming.com site for the PC platform, as he is the craziest fan of playing games on PC rather than on Mobile phones. Likewise you can also download games from the game store app and can enjoy the games like Candy crush, Clash of clans etc..

I've finally gotten a smartphone.

Any new suggestions? Mainly interested in free, turnbased, singleplayer games. Inapp purchases are fine, since I'm good at resisting such things. (This phone doesn't even have my credit card info yet.)

And how am I supposed to find something called "Curse" or "Cogs"??

(Amusingly, a search for "curse puzzle" gives Simon Tatham as the first hit.)

Hi. I have been playing all sorts of games on my phone for a long time, but most of all I like poker and Russian roulette. In fact, in a few months of playing on the phone, I was able to show excellent results at the poker championship.
