Subtracters are like adders, but instead of adding when they eat, they get smaller when they eat but cannot be stabbed.

I think this can create some interesting puzzles.

I created a beta image of what they would look like, so you can download it and see what they should look like

Interesting idea, but... It makes no sense they get smaller when they actually eat something. Where does the mass of the food and the mass of snake disappear...

..........Is the snake made of antimatter?

-_-

It does sound like an intriguing puzzle mechanic.

Hmm...have you considered entering any feature requests into the forum contest that's running now? You could win a free game!

Please note, the contest is for deliberately awful feature requests (you will do better if your entry is as awful and as entertaining as possible!)

You can read the contest description here, and submit your entry here. There are 25 hours remaining!

What do you think about posting the snake here for others to toy with?

So What?? You could design them as a new monster. Just like Chaco did with fireballs,
TopicID=19690, or Kallor with his(her) carrion beetles, TopicID=35113, or Jutt with his Salamanders, TopicID=21649. Especially Jutt, where near the bottom of the page he posts a zip file that allows you to use it in your own hold.

Scripting a new monster that's more than 1 tile large would be very complicated. I won't say impossible, but it would be very demanding. I personally wouldn't be able to make it happen, but then again I'm not really big on creating my own elements.

They should grow when you stab the tail. :P

Actually that's both a joke, and an interesting puzzle mechanic. I don't think there's anything out there you have to be careful not to stab that isn't immediately deadly (like a bomb). Mirrors, maybe, but it's hard to make an entire puzzle that relies on "don't stab the mirror" without oremites or some such other complicated interaction.

I know this thread is quite old, but I just wanted to add a thought for anyone who happens to read this old thread.
Basically, I thought of a logical explanation as to why these serpents would get smaller when eating something; they're not actually eating monsters, they're just running over them. Their weak spot is their bellies, so when they run over a monster, it hurts their belly.
