How do you get Balmung? (0)

I'm considered a hero by the characters (Gulon head in the Adventurers' Guild and all that), but I still can't remove the sword. I tried using the magic gloves on it but no luck.

It seems to be a Paladin-like event for the Warrior. My guess is that you have to be honorable throughout the game and achieve a certain level of honor (hidden stat). I'm trying it right now during my second warrior playthrough.

Yes, I believe this is more or less a direct reference to Quest for Glory paladinhood: like the paladin's sword in QfG, Balmung can burst into flames, and can only be wielded by someone who is worthy of it.
Though I wish other characters could become a paladin, not only the Warrior (even though a Sorceress, for example, wouldn't even know which end of the sword is which xD).

Can a dev clue us in as to whether this is something you can do during the game, or is it a post-game only achievement you'll see during the closing scenes?

Yes, the sword can be retrieved during the game.

It's only available to warriors for the paladin quest. Eitri isn't interested in it either.

You have to prove yourself worthy of paladin status in order to get it out. Volund is the one who made it, so perhaps talk to him about it.

He just tells me of a worthy soul. I ended the game with 89 honor and that wasn't enough.

Yes.YES.YESSSS!!

After getting the runic stick and doing the last honorable deed I was able to pull Balmung from the tree!

Well... dangit.

That means you're pretty much sabotaged from the beginning of the game, then, as the warriors will naturally pick the warrior-specific introductions when talking to the Jarl and the Norns.

And I've been meticulous in doing things with this character.

You know, it's a two hander. Pretty powerful, but I kinda got used to my sword and shield style

Sword only, but I already have all Fighter moves so if it granted any I wouldn't know (Pretty sure it doesn't though, you just get the sword) .

I might of course be overcomplicating things, but I did manage to score 91 honor so I shouldn't be far wrong.

You're only supposed to tell people where you got the armour from

I don't think it's even used anywhere in the game.

Actually, no, IIRC he requests that when you boast about your deeds at the tavern, you say that you only survived because of his armor. I guess that kinda counts as being humble, but you still have to boast first. Double bind!

Yes, when. He does not actually require you to boast, just acknowledge his craftsmanship when you do it

Okay, when you save Sigurd, you have the option of introducing yourself.

I have to choose between saying that I am a "warrior and a slayer of trolls", or "You are in my debt for saving you."

I suppose it's possible to have been a slayer of trolls by that point, but... this is a tough cookie. The last one just feels arrogant.

Did I choose the right thing by selecting "slayer of trolls"?

But yeah, helping somebody for personal gain is absolutely against the honor code, while in this case just introducing yourself (with a little boasting) after you've seen battle is not. It's mostly the straight out lies that are dishonorable.

Did you otherwise follow his guidance in what to do? Seems you got the same honor score, so maybe that didn't affect it? Unless he answered the same way you did.

I did the entire playthrough (my third as warrior) with bjorn's seven-point guidelines posted next to my screen. My decision on what to say to Sigurd was deliberate, though I can't really say whether it was right or wrong. It was certainly one of the toughest choices in that context.

I think one could score some honour points by showing the armour made by Andvari to people in both taverns, thus keeping the promise given to him

Yep, it gave another 1%

Still not boasting though, she just says "Behold, the mighty armor crafted by Andvari", keeping her promise (6th rule). Just show it
