I'm totally loving the game, but this puzzle is evil personified. After about 8 hours trying to honestly solve it I officially give up and would much appreciate some hint.
Am I right, that the goal is to connect two gate contacts with two other contacts?
Am I right, that like in all similar puzzles the empty square should eventually go to the lower right corner?
If I'm not, then where should it go?
And if I am, then where should the "dead ends" (blue gear, yellow stars and the unremarkable third one) go?

The puzzle only affects the west bridge. So if your doing the puzzle and you make the RIGHT side connect with the TOP left side, and you go out of the West Bridge, you will find...something

Also if you make the west bridge connect with the "void" (empty tile) you will also find something

Is completing that slide-tile puzzle an obligatory part of the game or does it just provide you with some helpful (but non-crucial) goodies ?

Im not sure how you're supposed to connect to the upper left part from the west bridge. I mean i just make the connection and have a tile in the top left continuing upwards. And yet when I try to get there it says the path ends in a dead end... not sure what im missing

It's totally optional.

Not exactly top left, rather the contact on the top.

Oh, so was it the result of this Andvari puzzle that the dragon bone cave with a fighting challenge opened up for me ? And if yes, is this it... or are there any other optional secret rooms?

I dunno. The thing is the map will still show the way as blocked even if you do everything right.

Now I finally got the map correct, what do I do with the frigging ice wall? Disrupt doesn't work, Flame Aura I can't even cast, everything else is useless...

Climb it! Click a spot towards the top left of the gap at the top of the ice wall.

I love this game so much, but sliding puzzles have always been the death of me. If anyone would be kind enough to post screencaps of the end results I need to work toward to get to the secret areas I would appreciate this so so much.

If your goal is to get to the secret areas, then you don't need to complete the sliding puzzle perfectly. Just connect the Nidavellir gate picture (or from the runic stone circle picture) to the ice wall picture and to the empty space. The goal is to create a route with the available tiles.

I'm sure there's some sort of reward for actually completing the puzzle, so if I manage it, I'll post a picture.

When you say the empty space; do you mean the missing tile from the sliding puzzle, or one of the 'dead end' tiles, or...?

Sorry, that was indeed a bit unclear. By empty space I mean the missing tile from the puzzle. It actually has an equivalent in Svartalfheim, so make sure you can visit it.

So what is considered "solving" it anyway? Having all the points and lines connected plus one leading to the blank space?

Does that actually give you anything? I came "close" once, but a right-angle wire piece was stuck in a corner and I couldn't figure out a way to properly connect it. Which isn't all that close but hey, close enough.

The best I can solve it so far is to have a complete, connected path without loose ends. I haven't managed to also include access to the empty tile. Just doing a connected path didn't work (I tried two variants), so I guess that to properly solve it you need a connected path AND access to the empty tile?

Any Word of God on this? Pretty please? Just a hint, perhaps? This puzzle is EVIL.

I'm confused. I solved the puzzle to get to the battle zone (which I suck at btw; can't kill that freakish bear deer thing). That's fine. But when I make the paths lead to the empty space it's the exact same as when I lead them to the glacier. What's the difference supposed to be?
Edit: Wow there's some power of posting thing going on here. You lead the path from the runes to the blank space, not the west bridge path.
