I dont really get this. I have got the character on to the square several times but nothing happens.
What am I missing?
Has anybody got an explanation or a demo please?????

If it has a sword, it wasn't "standing" on the square -- it was just lying astride it.

You want it in its non-sword variant on the square. As the scroll explains, think of the character as a 2x1 block that you're rolling along. Some pages call this a Rolling Block Maze. You can find more information about them at http://www.logicmazes.com/rb/column.html

EDIT: Oh, and the best solution for this room currently stands at 150 DROD turns, which is 41 block moves, I think.

Could I get some more specific directions here? I can't figure out any good intermediate steps for the cube. Every move sequence I've tried just leaves me stuck in the same few places, so I'm clearly doing something wrong.

From the start, move the block:

That will at least get you out into the open. You'll need to move to the upper left area at least two more times. It's ok to be on the goal square in the wrong "state" (that's partway to the solution).

This is one of those puzzles where it may help to draw a state diagram.
