To celebrate Pi Day, here's a funny music video.

1. Open the original file in your favorite sound editor (I do this in Audacity).
2. Invert the sound track.
3. Open the converted version of the original sound file as an additional sound track.
4. Add the tracks together ("quick mix" in Audacity).

The resulting sound file is the difference between the two. How much you can hear this difference when you play it is what effect the file conversion had.
In a way, yes, but not exactly.. The audible difference you get when doing this is what you would hear if you could somehow hear all the frequencies separately at the same time, but that's not the way our ears work. Lossy sound formats take advantage of psychoacoustics. Combinations of frequencies played simultaneously can mask out things we would otherwise hear fine in silence, etc. In other words, the audible difference might not be as audible when mixed with the rest of the sound (exactly how much depends on the codec and quality used, obviously.. and your ears :)).

A huge number of Chess rule variations, testable with java applets.

I had played 'Tandem' with a group of friends before, but most of these are news to me. Going to try a few for fun whenever I get the chance.

That's news to you? That's why there's pasteurization: because unpasteurized milk can contain pathogens. Check Google News for either "raw milk" or "unpasteurized milk" and you'll get things like--

"A two-year old was hospitalized with yersinia, a gastrointestinal infection, after drinking raw milk on her family farm...."

Now, whether the stuff should be regulated by law is another matter; I don't know whether the health risks are such that it really is just a personal decision or whether one person's choice to drink it can infect others. But, yes, there is a health risk.

I am frightened that people actually play a game as blatantly moneygrabbing and hilariously sad as Adventure Quest.

I'm sorry. RPG flash games do not warrant the what, $20 they want now?

If you think AQ is bad.. you've never tried Runescape or Maple Story. Though I've only heard stories about the former, I can assure you that Maple Story is much worse than AQ. Maybe not exactly in the money-grubbing department, but definitely in the fun and perceivable value department. AQ advertises (or at least has advertised) itself as a coffee break RPG, and as far as that's concerned it succeeds nicely. Yeah, I agree that the price they used to charge for Guardian status ($10) fit better, but it's not as terrible as you make it sound. *shudders at the memories of feeling the grind in Maple Story as soon as level 20 and the dev team's plot to sell a 2x XP card for all the not-so-hardcore-people who wouldn't play despite the grind...*

Adventure Quest advertises everywhere already, so a link here is kinda pointless.

As for me, I can't play it because it lags on our school computers.

I used to play adventure quest maybe 3 years ago. I was quite into it, though unlike a couple of my friends, I never paid. It's a nice little timewaster for a couple weeks until you get bored, but for quick RPG's, KoL is better. Also, for an AQ style of game, I would recommend (childish as it may be) pokemon. It has much the same feel, but is just generally better, and much more addictive.

I can't believe I just plugged pokemon. Someone slap me

Call it childish if you want, but my copy of Pokemon Ruby entertained me for 321 hours. A pretty good payoff, if you ask me.

Anyway, back on topic... not exactly a link, but paste this into a bookmark and try it on any website:

javascript:R=0; x1=.1; y1=.05; x2=.25; y2=.24; x3=1.6; y3=.24; x4=300; y4=200; x5=300; y5=200; DI=document.images; DIL=DI.length; function A(){for(i=0; i-DIL; i++){DIS=DI[ i ].style; DIS.position='absolute'; DIS.left=Math.sin(R*x1+i*x2+x3)*x4+x5; DIS.top=Math.cos(R*y1+i*y2+y3)*y4+y5}R++}setInterval('A()',5); void(0);

Sup. I hit level 50 in Maple Story. That 2x XP card as far as I know is only sold in Japan, has a maximum number of hours per day, and is set up because Japanese kids pretty much quite literally don't have time to play otherwise.

Because, you know, a brief glance at the Japanese School system tells you that kids are home for like 2-3 hours a day, else studying or sleeping.

And besides, level 20 is frigging cake, unless you're playing a warrior or something. And warriors get one of the hardest grinds pretty much handed to them. Unlike clerics.

oh god, the zombie lupin tree

oh god you just snarl at everything and you lose your VERY HUMANITY keeping that map to yourself so you can level at a decent clip

Did a search and I don't think anyone's posted this yet:

How It Should Have Ended

Check out the Archive link for their renditions of how some movies should have ended. Much as I enjoy Tolkien, I've always wondered about that. (You'll understand when you watch it.)
