Couldn't find out where this was posted, but assumed it must be somewhere so

Why is there a save point near the stairs at the end of each floor?

I've been playing for a few years now, and I could never understand what this was all about. What purpose does this solve if any or is it just there because they felt like putting it there?



(ps. completely off topic but DROD not being on Steam is a sin)

When you go the restore screen, you can restore from the start of the level, the start of a room, or you can restore from a checkpoint in the room - but when you restore, other rooms may be unconquered if you visited them later. A checkpoint at the end of the level ensures you can restore back to a point where the whole level was completed, letting you easily search for secrets etc.
