I had much trouble with this, always being one turn too late. But I finally managed it. The previous hint about the sword was useful, but I needed to turn it once too.

Not too many. I'm afraid that once you've gotten that it's mainly a matter of efficient movement and sword swinging. If the roach queens are running south, remember that they won't if you're on the same Y as them.
