I suspect I already know the answer, but is there anyway of writing a program that generates hold files? e.g., a program that could create random rooms automatically. Or even something that can take a text file and compile it into a room. Obviously scripted characters and even yellow doors would be very complex, but even something that could place elements in each layer would be fun to play with.

Sure, you could implement a program like this. You can grab the source code to view the format that the .hold files are produced in.
