I haven't played this hold, but looking at the room image I'd hazard a guess that they kept some still-cuttable tar or mud blob, finished the room to drop the doors, stabbed the blob to generate babies and thus un-finish the room again and left via the north exit.

Of course, this might be called bug since sometimes it is possible to finish a room much faster than was intended by the architect
