What is that door on the splash screen?

It appears to be a jail door, considering the bars in the small window at the top. Perhaps it represents the wondrous contents within the game? Maybe it represents the wondrous contents of your brain once you have been properly enlightened by DROD?

It could also be a picture from the AE credits. I am only up to Level Fifteen, so that is pure speculation, of course.

Chances are that it was just a fancy picture Erik or trick drew that was put into the game simply because it looked cool.

My interpretation has always been that it resembles a dungeon door, and that by starting DROD you enter that dungeon. (or at least Beethro does)

Wow. I never noticed that was a door. I assumed it was some weird shaped PC card or something.

If it is a prison door, perhaps it signifies that your mind is about to be held prisoner for the next few hours.

I've always thought that was the door to King Dugan's Dungeon, in particular.

(That's because I first saw that splash screen in the standalone KDD 2.0, the first DROD game I played. At the time, I didn't understand that I could import all the official holds into one installation.)
