Alright, seeing how it's currently 2:45am and it's technically July 15 for me, and since I can't sleep (or type) right now, I figure I may as well open up submissions for the contest now. Many people have downloaded the hold, both from this thread and from my website, and many sets of victory demos have been saved. Now here's what you need to do in order to turn those demos in to an entry:

First, take your lowest demo move count for each of the six puzzle rooms (Entrance, 1N, 1E, 1S, 1W, 3W) and add them up. For 3W, the keystrokes for placing the mimics are counted in the move total within the demo, and that's the number we're going by since it's recorded for posterity.

You should now have a move total from the demos. Below this post, you need to make a new post that includes that total, and the number of moves you used in each room as well. If after you've made your post you then manage to lower your move total, feel free to update your post with the new numbers. I ask that you edit instead of making a new post because it will make it a little easier to go through the entries in 6 days, and it'll save you having to type out all the numbers again instead of just updating the ones that have changed.

If your move total is higher than some of the others posted, don't despair: even if yours isn't one of the three lowest totals, you can still win rank points! If you have the fewest moves in any one room, you get 5 rank points regardless of what your overall total is, and just for having a total lower than mine you get 10!

This means that if your move total is 3000, but you only used 35 of those moves in 1E, you would still earn 5 points for having the fewest moves in a room. If the third lowest move total was 1900 and your total was 2000, but that's lower than mine (and it is), you still get 10 points. In the case of a tie for low moves in a room, everyone involved gets 5 points (if fifteen people all tie for low moves in 1N, 75 points are given out).

Entries will be accepted until July 20, and I'll make a post 24 hours before closing as well as a post to end submissions. Then I'll go through the entries and figure out who's in line for a prize, and those people will have to zip their demos and post them so everyone can see how they did it, and so I can verify them. I'm going to request that demos be posted within two days of the end of the entry deadline, just so the contest doesn't drag on and on ...and on.

So there you have it, entries for the contest may now be officially made. Several days ago, eytanz made his submission to me in email because he knew he wouldn't be around this week, and now I'll put it up here as the first official entry to the contest:

Eytanz:
Entrance: 88
1N: 971
1E: 48
1S: 570
1W: 120
3W: 235
Total: 2032

Good luck to all!

1W: 120
1N: 968, like this Porche
3W: 245
1E: 40 (I had to match the leading total! This room's my room!)
1S: 539

Total: 1977

Alright ladies and gentlement, we're about a day and a half from the deadline for submissions, and we only have 4 entries. Remember, all you need to do to get any points is have a lower move total than I do, or the least number of moves in a single room, so it's still worth your time to put up your numbers! If you don't tell us about them, you can't get credit for them.

I'll make another post some time tomorrow announcing the end of submissions, and then I'll take some time to sort out the entries and collect the victory demos.

I think I've gone as low as I'll get, even though the previous posts tell me there are at least 15 moves still to be saved.

Entrance : 65
1W : 118
1N : 954
3W : 209
1E : 43
1S : 494

Oh, well, since everyone else is posting scores, I suppose I might as well too (I probably can't improve these any more, but I might try again).

Entrance - 65
1N - 926
1E - 40
1S - 441
1W - 118
3W - 186
Total - 1776

Edit - I just improved 1S a bit.

Edit - I just improved 3W a bit as well.

Edit - I just improved 1S a bit more and got under 1800! Yay!

Edit - Mikko - You were inspirational! - 118 is possible in 1W.

Edit - Ugggh. Squeezing a few more moves off 1N.

Edit - Squeezing a bit more off 1S.

And I agree with eytanz.

These scores are ridiculously low, and I'm sure you can make them lower. Come on, first below 1000 moves total gets an extra 5 rank points! :D

First below 1700 before the end of the submission window, and I'll personally spend the mod points to do this.

1700 is probably a bit unfair.

Even without spawning, 1N still requires about 680-700 moves to complete, and 1S, due to waiting for the serpents, requires around 350-400 moves.

I would think 1750 is more reasonable, but, well, you're the competition controller, so it's up to you to decide.

Alright everybody, the window to enter this contest is now officially over. Everyone put down your pencil and lean back from your desk.

From low to high, here are the nine contest entries:
agaricus5: 1776
Kevin: 1791
Stefan: 1841
Mikko: 1883
swann_88: 1942
RoboBob3000: 1977
Eytanz: 2032
Doom: 2085
masonjason: 2523

So now the question is "who beat me?" Here are my room totals:
Entrance: 100
1N: 983
1E: 47
1S: 543
1W: 121
3W: 268

Total: 2062

This means almost everyone who entered is winning a prize; I love contests like this. Now I need everyone who hasn't already given me their demos to attach them to their entries, or post them below, so that we can all see how you did what you did. As soon as I've watched the demos I'll verify who's winning what prizes, and the world will be safe once more.

I've also made sure that everyone who submitted an entry got a mod point, so even if you aren't getting a prize you're still getting something for coming out. After all, this is a fun forum. :)

Edit: swann's not here, he's on vacation. The password to his zip file is "vacation" (without the quotes) for anyone who wants to watch his demos. Eytanz's demos are attached to this post.

I won a contest at last! (Well, that's if my demos are okay).

Here are the demo files. If any don't match up for whatever reason with my room counts, then tell me, and I'll re-export them.

Alright everyone, the results are in! I've reviewed all the demos, counted moves, crashed my computer somehow, and tallied up who beat who with what stick. Before I announce the prizes, here are the low move totals for each room:
Entrance: 65 RoboBob, Doom, Mikko, Agaricus, Stefan, Kevin
1N : 926 Agaricus
1E : 40 RoboBob, Agaricus, Kevin
1S : 441 Agaricus, Kevin
1W : 118 Mikko, Agaricus, Stefan
3W : 186 Agaricus, Kevin
Beat Me : Eytanz, RoboBob, swann, Mikko, Agaricus, Stefan, Kevin
One thing I really liked about this contest is how varied the entries were. Six people figured out how to do the Entrance in only 65 moves, and every one of the demos was different after about the first 10 moves. Agaricus and Kevin had entirely different solutions for 3W, that both just happened to come out to the same number.

I was also highly amused that an oversight on my part led to the low move totals in 3W. If you watch my demo for the room, you weren't supposed to be able to exit the spiral so quickly... mimic potions and force arrows just happen to reside on the same layer.

So, without further ado, here's the list of who wins what from this contest:
Agaricus: 140 points and an item from the DROD store
Kevin: 80 points
Stefan: 45 points
Mikko: 20 points
RoboBob: 20 points
Eytanz: 10 points
swann: 10 points
Doom: 5 points
Wesley, people who know things about things have told me that you can take a free copy of JtRH instead of an item from the DROD store if you wish, so you should keep that in mind when choosing your prize.

Thank you to everyone who entered and made this contest work out, I hope you all had as much fun playing the hold and competing as I had making the hold.

Edit: For anyone who downloads my demos and is curious about the Entrance demo, it accidentally got erased when I was testing something, and I had to recreate another demo with the same length: 100 moves. So that's why it looks like I'm wasting a bunch of time in it.

Well, I'm better at efficiency than writing songs or drawing maps, so I wanted to make sure I did the best I could this time ;).

I think I'll also pre-order a copy of JtRH.

Thanks, everyone, DiMono especially. This contest was really fun, and it helped me learn a lot more about exactly how efficiency works.

I changed 1W a little bit, adding a one-way path from beyond the green door back to the beginning of the tar, since it's possible to leave to the left with a living tar baby, and I changed the descriptions and ending text since they don't really make much sense outside the context of the contest.

I'm going to leave the contest version of the hold at the top of this thread, so anyone who really wants the Legacy copy of the hold can have access to it. And with that, we can all get ready for what devious contest August will hold for us all.
