Like a phoenix rising from ashes, the Level Design Contest is reborn! :thumbsup

It works like this: you download the template level found here, and use that to make a level.

The rules are as follows:
(1) You can add whatever you like, but you can't move or delete the objects already placed in the template.
(2) The only exception to the above is that you may change a square wall into an exit.
(3) You can't put anything to the right or below the no-scrolling block.
(4) Levels must be completed in this month, and posted in this thread.
(5) One entry per person; quality trumps quantity.
(6) Majority vote on this forum decides the winner.

Special rule for this month:
(A) Passage. The expanding walls subdivide this template into seventy-two 3x3 sections; your player must pass through at least sixty of them. Passing through the same section two or more times still only counts as passing through it once. The sections with the starting position and exit, however, do count towards the quota of sixty.

Also, since the template is a bit on the restrictive side, (B) You MAY move both the starting position and the exit to suit your level, but must still be located in the center of a 3x3 section.

Good luck!

This is the basic template I used to make my "Pipe Dream" and "Back to the Plumbing" levels (see the 2007 & 2008 level sets, respectively). Sorry if I seem a bit conceited by posting it, but I feel it still has plenty of potential left.

Glad to help.

I know I haven't submitted any new levels in quite some time, but that doesn't mean I don't still have a trick or two up my sleeve. ;)

And I've kept all the templates we've used before; we could always recycle one or two of those too (the April 2009 template is pretty much a classic). Some of them can even be made to use in both ST1 and ST2.

Also, I forgot to update my signature on the Spiderweb boards with a link to this thread; I'll be doing that shortly.

I'll work on a level for this after I fix the complications from a simple hardware upgrade...

I like the template, but when the rules say you can't delete any objects already placed, does that mean we can't put objects where the pipes would expand into at the start of the game?

Sorry about the confusing language. Yes, you can put any objects where the expanding walls would expand. If you want to, you can even block the expanding walls from ever expanding.

As I mentioned above:

If you replay these levels, you'll see many objects between the expanding walls.

When I originally made them, I was in a brief period of creating levels that would assemble themselves when you started playing, and couldn't be bothered putting in all the walls I had planned to put in, so I used expanding walls a lot.

Alas, I probably wont be able to make a level this month. I'm currently in the 1/10 scenario contest for Blades of Avernum over at the Spiderweb boards. Most of my creative energy is going into that.

Yeah, I'm in that contest too, so most of my thoughts are also directed there. I'm still planning to make a level here, though.

I see that nobody's posted a level yet, and it's now halfway through August. Let's officially extend this to the end of this month and see what happens.

Is my template really that restrictive, or is there really that little interest in reviving the level design contest?

My biggest problem with it is that it's a big template. It's hard to fill it with good puzzles, and I'm having trouble coming up with puzzles for little levels.

Yeah, it is a bit on the large side. If it helps, I'll make the next one smaller.

I understand your frustration. You don't have to make each little section into a puzzle; you can combine several to make larger puzzles, provided you stay within the template's rules. And since you don't need the player to enter every 3x3 section, you can even make some areas strictly decorative.

*dusts off the topic*

It would seem that, even though expression of interest in a monthly contest was a bit high (at least initially), interest in competing is precisely nil. Therefore, I officially declare this contest dead and buried.
