If you're right in front of an evil eye when you try to attack it (without high enough attack to do it damage), it will repeatedly do damage to you until you are dead. This presumably happens with other similar monsters as well.

EDIT:
This seems to happen with all monsters. I am using the most current build (1.2.0.55), but don't have the updated graphics (in case that matters).

As far as I can tell it is intended that you can attack a monster even if you can't damage it, which, I believe, is reported in this bug.

Yes, you are now allowed to attack monsters in this situation. If the monster can't damage you either, then the fight will end after three consecutive harmless hits.
