This would probably be rather complicated to get just right. There are multiple variants of this I doubt we can all handle (i.e., dying on entering a new level), how about this for entering from an adjacent room:
When exiting a room, if entering a new room would kill the player, the game messages this to the player and forbids the move that exits the room? That might appear odd, but it's probably better than retaining this corner case that creates buggy artifacts.
