In some cases (entering a room, starting a level) something can cause you to lose health (goblins, waterskippers, seep, scripting). If this happens on the 0th turn, and you are reduced to below 0 hp, you die. Then, you restart the room, take damage and don't die. You can wander around at 0 hp, but if anything causes you to take damage you die. I think that this is a bug. Possible fix: don't take damage on the 0th turn.

This was mentioned somewhere before, though I don't think mrimer ever got around to fixing it. Your solution seems reasonable enough.

Change _HP?

I sincerely hope that was a joke. :?

On another note, I just found a bug you may never notice. Set _HP to 0. When you start, you'll be able to walk around and stuff, but even though that's fun in a 'lol i is unded' way, restart. You die. While you're dying, hit undo. Profit.

Also, more bug! Grabbing stuff un-blackifies stuff, and you can't kill stuff. And stuff does stuff with stuff on flying stuff. Stuff! :D

Sigh.

Someone Else's proposal was to make it impossible to change _HP on the zeroth turn. You see now why I'm saying this would not be a good idea?

How about making it impossible to set HP to 0 on the 0th turn?

That way you can still start with 200 HP, kill the player using scripts etc.

Maybe attacks on the 0th turn should be capped to 1 HP minimum?
Idk though, doesn't really sound elegant.

or make it that if you are killed on 0th turn and you hit undo/restart you are taken back to previous room, right before you entered your demise.

This would probably be rather complicated to get just right. There are multiple variants of this I doubt we can all handle (i.e., dying on entering a new level), how about this for entering from an adjacent room:

When exiting a room, if entering a new room would kill the player, the game messages this to the player and forbids the move that exits the room? That might appear odd, but it's probably better than retaining this corner case that creates buggy artifacts.
