Nothing in your post needs to be secreted unless it reveals some sort of strategy or otherwise non-obvious thing about the board. Theoretically Scott perhaps should have secreted his answer, although the fact that you can believe the scrolls isn't exactly a matter of national security. you can believe every scroll in Dugan's Dungeon, so far as I can remember. User created holds are a different matter altogether, and the best way to judge those is by reading the architecture forum, or just asking.
As for how to defeat the roaches without using the alcove,

× it merely requires efficiency in your slaying. try to kill a roach with every turn if possible. If you step moving your sword into a roach or turn your blade into the roach, you will kill them. Also, don't forget to try and control the shape of the roach horde as it moves towards you, if you can get it to where it is a friendly 2 wide group, finishing them off is easy. Pay attention to the roaches that are outside the 2 wide column, and try to prepare for their coming.
Don't sweat this too much right now, you will pick up those sword fighting skills as you progress through the dungeon, and when you come back here you will wonder how you ever thought it was a challenge in the first place. Stick with it, and good luck. This game is amazing, you'll be glad you did.
