To beat lvl1 , 6N 2W (the one with multiple rows of roaches) without using the alcove? (the note says that a master swordsman should be able to do it)

Also, if any of this should be hidden pls tell me (new to this forum)

Nothing in your post needs to be secreted unless it reveals some sort of strategy or otherwise non-obvious thing about the board. Theoretically Scott perhaps should have secreted his answer, although the fact that you can believe the scrolls isn't exactly a matter of national security. As a matter of fact, aside from the scroll that tells you

you can believe every scroll in Dugan's Dungeon, so far as I can remember. User created holds are a different matter altogether, and the best way to judge those is by reading the architecture forum, or just asking.

As for how to defeat the roaches without using the alcove,

Don't sweat this too much right now, you will pick up those sword fighting skills as you progress through the dungeon, and when you come back here you will wonder how you ever thought it was a challenge in the first place. Stick with it, and good luck. This game is amazing, you'll be glad you did.

Ah... Yes, Level 8 is ridiculously hard compared to just about everything beforehand. There's many a level afterwards that will seem easy (and many that make level 8 look like a joke) once you've made it through this.

If you go back to level one after a few more levels you should find it no problem.

A much bigger challenge, for me anyway, was to get to the scroll on level 3, twice north without re-entering the room.

I just happened to replay the room on level one, and found that I could kill all the roaches in the top chamber without going farther east than the eastern edge of the alcove, without entering it. Despite it seeming impossible, I nonetheless feel that it should be possible to retreat one square less than that with masterful technique, but I've been unable to figure it out, or devise a mathematical proof as to its impossibility. I guess this is more appropriate on the challenge board, but I'd be interested in seeing how to do it if someone devised a way.

For both those challenges, I found the movement tips on backswiping and Gunthro's tips on roach movement to be most helpful.
