I *assume* that I should not be trying to get past the Blue Tar yet - correct?

I also assume - alas! - that I should somehow have enough greckles to be able to go through the huge greckle-gate path? Is this correct??

Correct. The Tar Mother is invincible until you backtrack to this level after progressing much further with the game. (As a guideline, your ATK must exceed an enemy's DEF before you can attempt to kill it.)

You do not have to open the massive greckle-gate path; it just leads you to a secret room, which is only important if you're trying to get 100% secrets. It becomes inaccessible once you begin the fight with the Homeland boss.

I found you can get enough Greckles, ATK and DEF to visit the
secret room, and defeat the first Tar Mother, by just
playing the Homeland level from scratch.

(enter it from a brand new game)

But, yes, the blue tar mothers are for later.
