just wondering if they're a tease or if I missed something...they don't open even when everything's dead (except for the bricklayer), so...?

They're a tease. Well, to be more exact, you either need the pickaxe or portable orb to open them. There's no other way to open them. In fact, I'm not even sure you supposed to open them. I completed the game without opening them.

I guess they're just meant to symbolize some drain gates for the canal...

There is no portable orb in the second half of TT.... however, there might be something on the other side if you use the pickaxe? I just checked by going down the Archivist's stairs again, and when I press Load during the final cut scene it says "Rooms explored: 359 (99%)". So there's one more room somewhere.....
