I just started playing DROD. I have a MacBook Pro, running OS X 10.5.5. I've been using and programming computers since 1975, so I'm not a newbie, other than with DROD.

I don't see other signs that DROD is unhappy on this machine. Any clues what I should look for? Does it want more memory?

I use a PC, but there are some troubleshooting steps you can rely on for all platforms:

Does the game make a beep or some other noise right before crashing? If so, you may want to look at the program files for the game to see if lines were added to drod.err. Paste any errors you get here.

And some other questions I'd like to ask just in case:
-Is this [classic] DROD or DROD RPG? (RPG bugs go here)
-Is this in The City Beneath or an older game (JtRH, AE)?
-Is this Demo or Full?
-Do you have CaravelNet?
-What version are you running? The latest [stable] version of The City Beneath is 3.2.0.83, and the latest version of RPG is 1.1.0.54. Well, these are the PC versions, but I'm assuming that DROD is at the same version on all platforms since I've seen no evidence of the contrary.
You can patch your game up to the latest version here. You shouldn't be running the beta 3.2.1.84 on OS X unless you're testing it; if you went ahead and got 3.2.1.84, I recommend reinstalling.

• I doubt it's a memory issue. In OS X, memory allocation is dynamic, so any given application receives as much memory as it requires.
• I'm wondering if Leopard might be the culprit, but I really have no clue.
• It would be helpful to know what version of DROD you are using—is it Tendry's Tale (aka RPG)? I'm running OS X 10.4.11 and have only ever experienced crashing with the demo of DROD-RPG, as the full version has worked flawlessly.
• Here is a link which describes DROD-RPG crashing on another MacBook Pro which was running 10.5.5, but it seems there was no resolution.

I have RPG; I didn't realize that was what I had chosen to download, but it's what I have. I'll go peruse reports there. I just downloaded yesterday, it's version 1.1.0.54.

There were no beeps before crashing. I can't find a drod.err file.

I'm using the full version. When I was first getting the problem I hadn't registered with Caravel.net. Now I have, and I've told DROD my account info, but I haven't checked the box to connect.

I'm pretty sure that CaravelNet has nothing whatsoever to do with why RPG is crashing on you.
Again, I'm wondering if it's a problem that's specific to Leopard.

Well, for RPG it would be drodrpg.err, but if you heard no beeps then its likely that it wasn't created yet.

A few Mac users have had trouble with a DROD RPG installed in the default directory. Try installing it elsewhere.

If that doesn't work, I have some random probing questions. Can these crashes happen if you don't do anything (just leave it on the main menu)? If not, it could be a problem with saving. Check the application data for DROD RPG. What .dats do you have?
And what size is drodrpg1_0.dat? (that one isn't saving related, but its size will help me determine something else)
I'm just asking in case I can find anything that seems off. To be honest, though, I doubt that these tests will find anything . . .

If you can't get RPG to work, I recommend trying TCB instead. In my opinion it's more fun (RPG can get samey). It's ultimately a matter of preference, but I think RPG feels underdeveloped anyways.
