The weevil, inspired by DiMono's bogus bug report, is a three-square bug. It moves like a roach, except that its body twists as it moves - like a serpent, except it can only turn 45 degrees at once. It's killed by stabbing the head. The tail will simply regenerate.

The weevil can continue in the direction it's going, or go to a square 45 degrees away. So if the head is facing north, it can move to the north, northwest, or northeast.

I'd far prefer the weevil to have its vulnerable spot on its tail. Otherwise it's too much like a big roach.

One problem I have with the weevil is it is utterly incapable of making a sharp corner... if it is lured into a 1 square wide passageway that turns, or t's off it will never be able to get anywhere else... with a vulnerable tail instead of head, that could actually become vicious trapping beethro places, but otherwise it's a roach that beethro can easily run circles around and laugh at due to its complete lack of threat.

Come to think of it, the tail is probably better.

Why not simply say it can be as long as you want?

Then there's 2 ways it could go...

One stab and it's dead

OR

You need to stab it down to size like a rattlesnake.

But that would be *exactly* like a rattlesnake, except the turning bit. And who ever heard of a weevil that was really long?

Who ever heard of (at least) two foot-long cockroaches with sharp, pointy teeth?

Who ever heard of an ever-pregnant, periodic spawning, cockroach?

Who ever heard of living tar?

Who ever heard of a brain that could live without a heart?

DROD heard, so anything can fly with regards to an actual explanation.

I think it's okay, actually, for all but the sharpest corners. Consider:

|.|
|*|
|@+--
| B-
+----

| |
|.|
|*+--
| @ B-
+----

| |
| |
|.+--
| *@ B-
+----

| |
| |
| +--
| .*@ B-
+----

It would probably struggle with corners like this:
## ####
### ###
#### ##
### ###
## ####

But there's the weakness of the monster.
That said, though, I do feel that this creature fills much the same niche that rattlesnakes would. The mechanics of which corners they get stuck on are a little bit different, but not so different, I think, that most puzzles designed for Weevils couldn't be tweaked into puzzles designed for rattlesnakes without too much change.

Yes, but they are still all in proportion. For example, large or small, you never see a twenty-foot-long and one-foot-wide cockroach. That would be even more unrealistic.

What of snakes? Whether 1500 squares long, or simply 2, they are still the same thickness.

Wiggy, eh?

Well, snakes are always any length. I admit that two squares is stretching (squishing?) it a bit though.

Sorry to get off-topic, but I
Challenge!

you to find a real snake more than 100 times longer than its width.
Back on-topic, I think this is distinct enough from a rattlesnake if some modification is made to the way in which it's killed. How about: you can stab any segment of it and have it turn into two smaller weevils?
