Just getting through this room is all the efficiency I need. It took me 1130 moves, which I could pare down if I cared. I don't think I would have found the solution on my own. Thank you so very much for your help.

Standing on 1 with my sword pointing N so that the guard is moving back and forth between 2 and the square just west of 2. If the timing is right - which is always iffy with those @#$!&* serpents - the serpent will be moving S and hit the square just north of 2 while the guard is standing at 2. The serpent loses one segment. Then the guard moves west, leaving you unprotected. Run for your life. Repeat as necessary.
How inefficient you ask? It took me about 900 turns.
