I think you mean the Archivist, and I think so - I was certainly able to get to him without killing the Slayer, although I wasn't able to kill him that playthrough.

I'm curious if people have managed to do this. I've only made one playthrough (and haven't beaten Rule 8 yet). It seems to me you would need lots and lots of +atk upgrades, preferably all in the 5x level, just to get enough atk to harm him. And then unless your atk is much higher than his 500 defense, his 800 atk would still kill you.

I also saw someone mention something about killing him with a bomb, but I've no idea as to how it is possible to get a bomb in the second half of the game.

I also managed this on the my run-through (although I then reloaded and killed the Slayer afterwards).

In my opinion, you seem to need a lot of a lot of + atk upgrade, had better be in 5. X level, just to get enough additional harm to him.

No reason to not
However, if you do choose to kill the Archivist with your sword, you will want at least 520 ATK and 20,000 HP. IIRC, there is about 4 ATK behind the Slayer, so getting to 520 ATK without it would require a bit more optimization and a *ton* of extra money.

Then again, this post seems to suggest the same thing. Perhaps it was taken out for some reason?

For the record, Gorvin's post "If I'm thinking of the right method, that [avoiding the Slayer] would mean giving up an extra +4 ATK and DEF" probably refers to the Pickaxe.
