Note: in the editor when placing a cover in a room it will be like placing tar; transparent in the editor, opaque when playtesting.

It could be useful.
How about calling it "Darkness", and when you step on a square adjacent to it it disappears until you move away again?

How about squares that you can't see until you step within a few squares of them, then they become visible?

That's exactly what I said, but in different words.

But they would actually stay visible. Beethro has a good enough memory to know what's there, and good enough ears to hear any monsters there.

...So basically this would be introducing a Fog of War to DROD? I think this would sort of take away from the whole "see the room and plan your strategy" motif the game carries...

Well, it wouldn't be the first violation of such a design rule. In Dugan's Dungeon, the tar on walls level kind of violated that rule as well, and strictly speaking, certain rooms of the 'Neather level (arguably almost all of them) also violated it. There's also a case to be made that orbs can also muddy the water since it's easy to make a room so that it's not obvious what orb does what.

On the other hand, IMHO the tar-on-walls level was one of the less "DROD-ey" levels, if you know what I mean, and I think people generally try to make it clear what each orb does as a matter of good design. I think I would personally frown on the creation of another room element that makes rooms more difficult to surmise by just looking at them. Especially, as in this case, where that is the element's only function.

(As a side note, on the subject of 'Neather rooms, each one ends up showing some degree of logic once you've played through them a few times, and I think that discovering such logic in this way is fitting for a last level as sort of a dungeon capstone.)

I think this really does work. It doesn't take away from the "plan-your-moves-before-you-start" because

A: The original level of planning isn't really that high. Orbs really aren't all that predictable, you know?

and B: It is still possible to plan for the worst(goblins) and work from there.

Although the potential for abuse is fairly high(say with 5 goblins hidden in a mass of roaches), the benefits and fun are higher. I say let the ball roll. If the architect messes things up, PIBKAC.

Ah, yes. I know it as PEBKAC though: Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair, and I've actually said that to people before when they came to me with a problem like "the coffee holder's broken" (referring to the CDRom drive). My standard response is "tell your boss there's a PEBKAC problem, and that he needs to replace his warmware."

Anyway, this is more than a little off-topic.

You know what that's called, right? A palindrome?

Like "mom", "dad", and "Madam, I'm Adam".

The best one (uin my opinion) is "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!"

A number of years ago Games magazine ran a contest for the best palindrome featuring a celebrity's name. It ended up that the winner was:

Lisa Bonet ate no basil.

Which is ok, I guess, but there was one entry that really impressed me, which I shall repeat now

If Arnold Schwarzenegger was captured by the enemy, gagged and tied to a chair, his muffled screams would sound something like this: "Ihtekilgnihtemosdnuosdluowsmaercsdelffumsihriahcaotdeitdnadeggagymeneehtybderutpacsawreggenezrawhcsdlonrafi!!!!"

Which has to be the only palindrome featuring Schwarzenegger ever. Well I guess that's the second, since I don't remember the exact words, nonetheless I was highly amused.
