When you force a single brained WW away from you into the smell range for a stalwart, the WW continues moving as if it was still scared of you. This does not occur when the WW is unbrained.
In addition, if there is no path from you to the WW, it acts as if it was unbrained. Once a path opens up (such as by you destroying a secret wall) it acts as brained, but with the stalwart as the target.

EDIT:
Actually, I don't know what's going on, but whatever it is, it's not right.

Brained wraithwings always flee from their closest target (you or a Stalwart) using the brain's path towards you (the player), even if this takes them closer to a Stalwart (which can even result in the wraithwing killing the Stalwart)

Unbrained wraithwings use a much more familiar Stalwart/player target-choosing algorithm and flee like unbrained wraithwings do, which always takes them further from a Stalwart (if possible).

TFMurphy actually has built a hold that explains (among other things) how brained monsters and Stalwarts interact. It's part of a project that we (as in, a team including me, TFMurphy, and others) are putting finishing touches on, and should be released before the end of the year. :)

So, there is no bug, weird as this may all seem. Brains and stalwarts are going to be explained in much finer detail eventually.
