Not really a problem, just a question, and this seemed the best place to ask.

When I play DROD, a couple of text files, stderr.txt and stdout.txt show up on my desktop. They vanish just as easily when I close the game. Is it supposed to do that? It doesn't seem to be causing problems. Sup with that?

I've noticed those files before in My Computer, but I never connected them to the presence of DROD. Strange.....

The files are stdout.txt and stderr.txt and they're output for the game. If you keep deleting your default temp directory, like I used to do, the files go to the desktop.

Basically, they're the standart output and standard error streams. To prevent the game from displaying text on your screen while you play, it creates files for them to go in to instead.

If you want to learn more about this, read up on linux :)

The SDL library, which we use for graphics in DROD, creates these files. On a Windows machine, open up a command prompt, go to your DROD directory, and run drod. You'll see that you are immediately dropped back to a command prompt, even though DROD is running. Because of the way Windows handles GUI programs, all output to stderr and stdout is lost (unless you redirect the output, i.e. "drod > file.txt" ) To make life easier, SDL creates the files and redirects output into them. This way, if SDL has a problem, it can tell you where the problem occurred.

I believe that SDL outputs these files to wherever you're running your program from, so I'd guess if they're on your Desktop, maybe you're running DROD from a shortcut on your Desktop?

::smiles and nods::

Well that's a ton over my head, but as long as it's running normally, I'm cool with that. Thanks for the answers:)

DiMono, did you change your avatar? Or is it just my computer acting funny?

Actually, I think it looked better the old way, but it's your choice. It still looks fine as it is.

Well, it's more creative than mine,
but I'd be hard pressed to find one
less creative than mine. I'd change
it, but if sloth was such a bad thing,
they'd make it a sin. :D

Edit: made it clearer, don't want to be modded down.

Wow, a thread back from the dead. You don't see that often around here.

I am so glad someone asked about those files. I had seen them and knew they were DROD related but didn't understand why they were needed. I still don't know that I understand why - can you say that in baby talk :D just kidding.
