I'm thinking - maybe the ranking system would work better if the ranks were flattened out? I mean, it's nice to start out with a rank 500 or not, but that's unfair to newer forumites who will be ranked purely on the quality of their posts, while I gain a huge lead on them just because I've been posting a lot.

In fact, I think the rank system needs revision - the levels made sense when they were awarded by number of posts, but there should be a smoother transition at the moment, and maybe there should be negative ranks for troublemakers...

Anyway, I'd like to call for the current ranks to be all reset so we can start from scratch - seems the decent thing to do.

One thing is, it isn't starting you with a number of points equal to your posts...just your board title. So, it's giving you the benefit of the doubt that most of the posts you have made are good ones. Perhaps if the rank per board title was adjusted, that would be okay, but I think it is perfectly reasonable to reward everyone that has had a presence on the forum with a certain base rank.

I suspect that having us begin with a rank of the number of posts required to achieve our old ranking is designed to simplify the process of going through the history of every post on the forum and ranking it. Those of us who've made way too many posts (I think there are six who've made more than a thousand) have probably made posts worthy of about a 500 ranking, should the forum mods decide to go through all the posts and decide whether they deserve to be ranked.

However, I think number of posts should be taken in to account in some way as well, at least up to a point. Maybe the first 200 posts automatically raise the ranking by 1, so new posters can feel they are achieving something?

If the mods are doing that anyway, I seriously pity them, as it will take a while to go through 22500 posts. Guys, come over to my house and I'll give you milk and cookies for your troubles

Yeah, but because the differences between ranks are so high, that means I can post hundreds of bad posts before someone new who posts only good stuff can catch up.

If the rankings were brought a whole lot closer to each other, then there wouldn't be a need to reset them, I agree.

Each post has a higher possible range than -1 , 0, 1. If you make a really good post, you could get multiple people moderating your post, and you could end up with +5 or even more. And if you did something *really* bad (or *really* good), a Forum Moderator could give or take a large number of Rank and/or Mod Points. So if you saved up a bunch of points and then went on a flaming rampage, you might find your points running out more quickly than you imagined.

Also, in the future other things could possibly earn you points - winning contests, even participating in some contests, submitting holds to the Holds board, etc.

I think for now, I might just hand out 10 points to everybody here. Everybody would get a taste of what moderating is like, and it would put more points into circulation.

I think that everyone should be given the same starting rating, at least a hundred or so so that people don't get to negatives too quickly.

I reckon that we'll have to re-do the rankings at some point, partly because with the advent of 1.7 there will be an extra dimension to the site that I think we should include, although I haven't discussed it with Matt S.

Then again, as Matt S. said, everyone has an idea about the rankings.
