Everyone can give points to others. If you are unable to, it probably means that no one has modded you up recently so you don't have any points to spend.

Game on,

The one thing that has disappeared is the Good/Bad buttons for your own posts; they were displayed until Shick did a few changes, but had no effect (you cannot mod yourself up).

Why does it cost more to mod down a high-ranked post, or vice versa? Shouldn't it cost less, to curb 'inflation'?

A high-ranked post is unlikely to be modded down because it's probably excellent.

The inflation in the system is supposed to be kept in check by the mods, who are responsible for seeding the system with mod points. The bar is also helping in this regard.

Not necessarily. All a low/high-ranked post means is that some people who hated/liked it got there first. Because it costs more to rate up/down a low/high post, once it achieves that status only a 'wealthy' person, almost certainly a moderator, can effect his opinion. Likelihood is literally a factor; sheer chance helps 'disenfranchise the poor'.

Wait; what's the "mod points required to mod a post up" formula? I've experimented with numbers, but to no avail. I do know that
0 -> 1 : 2 points
1 -> 2 : 2 points
2 -> 3 : 3 points
3 -> 4 : 3 points
4 -> 5 : 4 points
5 -> 6 : 4 points
6 -> 7 : 5 points

The pattern is obvious, but I can't put it into numbers. My math brain is off. Anyone have any tips?

It's probably something like this:
+-------------+------------+
|Mods on post | mod cost   |
+-------------+------------+
|n            |1,5 + n*0,5 | (.5 is rounded up)
+-------------+------------+

Thnak you, wallu. I was experimenting with ceil() and round(), but you've completely floored me. No, really.

Now I just need to make a logarithmic function that shows the number of mods it will take to mod a post up from zero to a specific number. Either that, or I'll do summation. But not today.

If n is even, then to mod from 0 to n requires
((n/2 + 1)*(n/2 + 2)) - 2
points.

If n is odd, then to mod from 0 to n requires
((n-1)/2 + 2))^2 - 2
points.

Thanks, Rabscuttle! I forgot the summation rules as quickly as I learned them. If one wanted to distribute, one could do that also.

[stuff]
Those can be reduced to:
Even: (n/4) * (n+6)
Odd:  (n/4) * (n+6) + .25

Or simply:
ceil((n/4) * (n+6))

:)
