A little addition to the idea: make these blocks pushable into pit/water. For example, if a 1x1 block is pushed into a pit, then it drops and acts as a normal square further on. If some part of the block is on land, it doesn't drop, as it has to be ENTIRELY over pit. Same with water. It can be used for puzzles, where the player has to push those shapes into gaps (think with wanderers), or use them as a mobile shield or make mazes out of them to delay monsters etc.
And colors... Maybe could be used to define their properties? For example, blue blocks can be pushed into water, black ones cannot be destroyed with a sword, gray are invulnerable to everything (even briar) but are immobile, green can be consumed by tarstuff...
