I've changed the Mr. Bar to show progress for DROD RPG: Tendry's Tale because we're about to begin voice recording and are entering full beta testing soon. (We're still working on F&M, but the Next Big Thing (tm) is the RPG, so we'll be showing this on the bar for now.) Stay tuned over the upcoming weeks to see some screenshots and hear more about the game!

Hey Mike if you want me to make a trailer or something for the new RPG just drop me a line. :) Also great to hear things are going as planned! I remember that I had a chat with you on CaravelNet about DROD RPG 4 months ago, and back then you said it wasn't much more than a toy. Nice to hear things are starting to get bigger and are already in a mature stage where voice-acting and beta-testing are needed.

(As for the shoulder-tapping, don't hesitate to shoulder-tap me if you need another tester :) )

EDIT: And it seems you guys have been working harder on the RPG than F&M, as it is already 80% done :)

Yes, I'm developing the game simultaneously for OSX. I'm planning to release it the same days as the Windows release. With trick's help, we will have a Linux release as well.

I'll be honest, when I heard "DROD RPG" I had about the same reaction most people had on discovering Metroid Prime was going to be a first-person shooter, although closer to the "Okaaayyy..." faction than the "SACRILEGE! Let's BEAT it for being DIFFERENT!" faction. But making it entirely deterministic, and taking ideas from Tower of the Sorceror... I can see how that would work. And I can see that if it does work (and I'm pretty sure you guys can make it work) it will be awesome beyond measure. So it looks like I have a summer of anticipation ahead of me... :)

I've been putting some thought into how everyone can help test. The game is stable at this point. None of our beta testers have mentioned any crashes, data integrity issues or anything otherwise serious for at least a month, and the game should have all of the bug fixes that have been made in the 3.2 game engine included, where relevant. So at this point we're just finalizing story and finishing up media, polishing game interfaces, tweaking some level balancing issues, etc.

The testing approach I think will be most effective is to have another "open beta" when the game is done and without known bugs, basically like we did for TCB 3.0. Then people can play through the demo levels -- there already shouldn't be any bugs found therein -- buy the full game if you like it, and also you can start making stuff in the level editor right away. As with DROD, the level editor is probably the trickiest area to debug because it's so versatile and it's practically impossible for a group of beta testers to unearth all possible design issues, even during a lengthy testing cycle (which has already been going for a few months). So, having the editor available to everyone would be the surest way to hammer out any bugs most quickly. However, I'm certain there will be fewer bugs than in 3.0, and also this would mean the game can get into everyone's hands sooner. If this sounds good to people, we can go that route again. Thoughts?

The only caveat I should mention is that I'm not sure how soon Matt will be able to develop the CaravelNet server interface for DROD RPG. The client part is mostly complete, but restructuring the forum to accomodate a new game (including new H&S board, DROD-RPG specific architecture board, etc), distinct CaravelNet scoring tables, might be unwieldy. Matt is having to put a lot of thought into this to make sure it works nicely. One option for boards is to have a completely new Boards section dedicated specifically to DROD RPG. So, we can think about either releasing the game before CaravelNet features are in place, or wait to release until these are implemented. If anyone has ideas for how to cleanly incorporate this and future different Caravel games into the existing forum space, including functionality for developing and publishing holds, hints, scoring, etc., please share your ideas.
