For newbies the only advice I can give you is "be the sword". In other words see the threat radius of the sword like so:

is your keypad

5 is your sword.

Now, if you're facing north 2 is Beethro. If the roaches are to the left and right of Beethro, where are they in relation to the sword? Can you hit them with the sword?
