And what looks like several beyond it.

I can sometimes get the snake pretty far away from the northwest corner, but it always ends up hugging the west wall and going right back up. I'm not sure if there's scripting in this level, but it doesn't seem that the snake is behaving like it should:

If there is scripting, how can I take advantage of it? If there is not, what about standard snake movements am I missing?

There's no scripting at all involved here, as you can see by the lack of an NPC character in the screenshot.

A simple rule: When you make the serpent go south you can force it easwards by going north.

Yeah, and this is because of something I learned about snake movement that might help. Just because a snake has horizontal preference, doesn't mean it will move horizontally. If it can't move west to get closer to Beethro, then horizontal preference doesn't matter anymore. It will just cycle through North, East, South until it can find a direction to move. Same with the vertical preference case.
