I almost can't watch 2001 any more, despite it being my favorite film. I'm in full weep mode, my body racked with sobs at right before Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite.

It's not HAL's fault. He's only doing what he was programmed to do. This sort of thing has cropped up before, and it has always been attributable to Human Error.
