This is very great, a final :)
I appreciate all the time and effort you put into this.
I liked the Master Orion quest very much up to the point where you introduced the three snake types. I didn't really understand them and gave up on playing.
I just hope that snakes won't be available too early in this sequel. Although I maybe have learnt a bit more about snakes because of Beethro's Teacher. I will just see whenever I got time to try this new part :)

You probably know about this. If you move the mouse over an object, and that includes snakes, a description text will be displayed. Besides, they're pretty intuitive.

There's a special trick when dealing with yellow and red snakes:

The white dots shows possible player's moves and the red dots indicates the snake's reaction. It tends to maintain it's current direction. Once you master it, handling several snakes becomes far easier, very predictable. (Doesn't work with green snakes).

thank you for the hint, I will revisit Master Orion and see if that helps on the quest. I hope I still have my save game, but I think so. :)

And game crashes in Windows Vista!

Thanks.

A few interesting facts about WQ:

First of all, I didn't plan to release a finished game from the beginning. All I wanted, at first, was to have a basic platform through which I could test stepping game's elements.
I planned to have something like a "stepping game creator", that would allow the user to create his own monsters via a scripting language. All was just for fun...

Then I used this not yet fully implemented engine to create DROD's basic monsters as a test. (that's why WQ monsters, mimics, etc are similar).
If I knew the game was going to be released from the beginning, I would have made things differently.

After that, I came up with the idea of having different avatars available for playing. Only then, I took the idea of releasing a game more seriously.
After having several heroes implemented, I realised that this would over complicate the process of adding a new monster,
since every new baddie should now be able to interact with the ten new entities smoothly.

I could have added a few different monsters, but this would be a daunting task.
When you have ten different types of heroes, the monsters must remain very simple. This way they will tend to work with all the heroes.

You can create a very fun monster to fight exclusively with the boomerang, or the bow and arrow, but it might not work with the sword or the axe. (and vice-versa).

Another thing: The "out of this world" feeling of WQ is kind of real.
The game was coded back in a time when I had two or three free week days.
My routine on Tuesdays was to buy pizza and soda, pack my notebook, and travel to one of my family's farm.
In a period of one year and a half, I used these two weekdays to create the game.

The decision to make it free was taken due to the fact that I did not want to limit creativity.
I didn't want to worry about the number of players WQ would have. I even refused proposals from people who offered good money to reshape it, and make a commercial game.

Morning routine: Grab a piece of paper, and "brainstorm" the game.
This was made along a river, by the forest. Or sometimes in a waterfall.

Afternoon: Coding .

Night: Coding and Pizza.

I don't know exactly the feeling of the game, since I haven't played it from the user's point of view.
But coding it felt like being far from the city, in the middle of nowhere... Wonderquest was really born in the woods.

Good times back there.

If you just download the Dreams Final Version, you can choose it in the menu. In this final version, both Dreams and Master Orion are included.

Is this still available? All I get when I try to download it is something named 4shared_Desktop_3.2.1.exe.

Yes, it is. You're probably clicking the wrong download link.

The file size is about 10.7 MB.

I'm also having trouble finding the installer. When I click on the "mirror 1" link at wonderquest.org, I get the message that the requested file link is invalid. :?

Searching for wonderquest on that site doesn't give any results.

Just seeing this for the first time, but the 4shared download link appears to be broken again? (It starts loading, but just hangs before the page actually appears...) Any chance you're still monitoring this thread?

I'm sorry for necrobumping, but on my new Windows Vista, clicking "mirror 1" goes to 4shared.com, and there's no link for WQ Dreams either. Can you make a direct link?

It's a long shot because there hasn't been any activity on this entire board for nearly a year, so you probably abandoned WQ by now, but I want to play WQ just because it's fun.

Hey, you never know. I play old games all the time, like Death Illustrated, which was forgotten over 11 years ago.

EDIT: Here's what happens. I click the nice shiny download button. It asks me if I want "free" or "4priority". I click Free. It asks for a download with a social network site (Facebook, Tumbler, etc.) instead of giving it. I don't have a social network except this forum, so I can't download. :weep

I'm sorry, but that didn't help. Indeed, what you posted WAS the problem.

Step 1: Click "download" (with the cloud and arrow icon).
Step 2: Click "Free download."

It produces a "download via social network" popup instead of downloading.

Failing that, try the link to the left.

googa, have you considered asking Caravel to host Wonderquest for you? I suspect they'd be willing, seeing as they already gave you a forum.

I just used RabidChild's link to install Dreams 4.2 on the Windows 7 partition on my old 2009 MacBook Pro, and the program launches fine, but as soon as I click the mouse after doing so, the program abruptly crashes and quits, without generating any sort of error messages. Has anyone else had this problem and figured out how to fix it?

I had the same problem. Going windowed had solved the issue. I have Windows 8.1, so I am guessing it might be GPU related. The other way - it only works in full screen for me.

Hi all,

i saw that NoahT was struggling to get the game working on a Mac in Bootcamp. So i thought i give WineSkin a try to make it work directly in MacOS (10.10).

http://sourceforge.net/projects/wineskin/?source=typ_redirect

Installation is pretty much straight forward:

1) Create New Wrapper (Wrapper Version 2.6.0) (Wineskin Version WS9Wine 1.7.27)
2) Install the software by opening the wrapper and point it to the installer.
3) install the game and select "do not open the game after install is finished".
4) tell the wrapper to open the exe file "WonderQuest.exe".

Enjoy the game on your Mac :)

Best Regards
markust

Alright, so I just tried following markust's instructions and was able to successfully launch WQ on OS X. However, once I copied over my old WQ player file, attempting to use it caused the same abrupt crashing to occur. Therefore it seems the issue is trying to use an older player in 4.2, rather than an issue with the operating environment.
