Sorry, but... what?

I'm afraid that I have no idea what you were asking here - could you please elaborate on your problem a bit?

If your problem is that you can't open ZIP or RAR files you might want to install a program that can do exactly that, like 7-Zip.

Because he hasn't replied yet, I'll share my possible thoughts.

Reading the post really closely, it seems like he's saying he can open a zip folder in Windows Explorer (which he may be calling "desktop"), but doesn't know how to open the files (since .exe's give a warning about possible missing components, and some other files can only be opened by using File>Open).

If that is the case, just copy and paste (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V) the files inside the zip folder to a place on your hard drive.

What it sounds like you're saying to the naked eye, though, is that you are saving downloaded zip files to the desktop, and you can't open them.
But should be able to open them (you still have to copy and paste files out of there if you want the Open dialog in a program to find them). To me, it seems like Windows Explorer has built-in .zip compatability, but for all I know, maybe it is using some program behind the sidelines.
