OK, take a look at the diagram. Since I couldn't find any public domain chess images to use, I had to improvise. K = King, R = Rook, P = Pawn, B = Bishop.

The situation looks impossible to have gotten into legally... but it can be done. Your question is this. What was the previous move made to get into this position?

No, this isn't my puzzle, it's a very old one, but a cool one :)

Warning, if this is right, there's a hint behind the first tag, and the full solution behind the second.

I'm making an assumption, which is:

EDIT: bah, collision! And I thought I'd be first.

Hmm, by the way, if you didn't find public chess images, you obviously haven't checked the Battle Chess Royale thread...

Erm... am I missing something? This is a very possible setup.

In fact, it's hard to think of a chess situation which isn't, unless you rely on 2 bishops on the same coloured square type trick.

Here's an interesting one I just thought of: What's the greatest amount of pawns of one colour you can have in the same column?

[EDIT]

I get the original problem now... I always a king to move into check though hence I didn't notice it.

6 pawns, and it's easy to arrange if the opponent cooperates. Only 9 pieces need to be eaten in the process.

6 I'd say, according to Maurog's post above... :P

(Let me guess - lack of sleep? ;))

np: Dominik Eulberg - Die Trottellummen Von Helgoland (Flora & Fauna)
