It took me forever to get out of the first "real" level, mostly because I couldn't beat the boss for a while.

.

so far my biggest gripe is that it takes 2 or 3 real wall-clock minutes to load games. is anyone else getting that? my computer does NOT suck. is it because I have the resolution at 1920x1200? (note that once the level is loaded, it performs just fine. this isn't covered by their general performance notes, because I don't experience stutter or lag).

It loads in 35-45 seconds for me... The full version. What are your specs?

Well it takes me a long time with 2 gigs of ram and a Geforce 8800 gts, so I'd say it's the game which is at fault.

Yeah, the first boss took me a while to figure out too. Trial and error seemed to be the best approach.

Also, did anyone one else pickup the Deus Ex reference? :nerd

My biggest gripe so far is that the enviroment makes it hard to spot enemies (although that may be on purpose) And it has a prey/console-ey feel to it, which is disappointing.

And I wish it had co-op so that I could play with my brother on the other side of the globe.

What do you mean by Prey/console feel ? I played Prey demo and I think I know what you mean, I just want to make sure. I'm considering buying the game because it's dirt cheap now, fun, and runs perfectly in wine. Oh, and i have shiny, new, expensive hardware now.

The way the story is told (in Prey) is somewhat annoying. Tommy's exaggerated voice is particularly irritating.
The story itself is pretty primitive, pretensious and cliche, it's the execution that makes the difference.
The levels while visually very cool are railroad-ish.
General lack of subtlety.

Anything else ?

Yeah, the story in prey is pretty poor, but it wasn't what I was referring too.

What I was referring to is the fact that the game has been simplified at touch too far. Everything has been streamlined to that all the user has to do is pick it up and play. Not to mention the fact that the HUD and weapons are extra large. Things that you normally expect in a console game (or at least I do).

However, having said that, some of the streamlining in bioshock has been pretty fantastic. I love the camera/research feature. On the other hand, the auto-aim (which can be disabled in the .ini fortunately) started to irritate me and I'm seriously missing the inventory, which is a layer of complexity I've always enjoyed.

Has anyone else noticed the design flaw that the harvest button is the same as the Hints button btw?

My idea of an inventory is something where everything physical, including weapons and foodstuff is stored. The gene bank is the equivalent of a spell book.

To be honest I don't like spells in modern setings. What's the point of making a non-fantasy game if you're going to imitate it anyway ?

Any sufficiently advanced sci-fi game is indistinguishable from a fantasy game.

I think the most direct comparison between Bioshock and Prey is the fact that you can't permanently die. Except that while it removes a great deal of challenge from both games, it's at least not actively annoying in Bioshock the way it is in Prey.

I've finished Bioshock at this point and love it to death. I keep mulling over various hints and implications based on late game revelations.

I am restoring to previous save every time I die. Resurrection just feels stupid.

I have to say, now that I've finished the game on hard mode that there's one point in the game that always gives me shivers no matter how many times I've replayed it.

SPOILERS FOR EARLY ENDGAME BOSS BATTLE

Having finally finished the game, my verdict would be that it's a really good game, but nowhere near groundbreaking. I played it on hard mode(which isn't all that difficult, as there were long stretches where I just used the wrench and the occasional freeze attack) and I found the story to be well done but terribly cliched (I could predict the entire story by the time you reach the first little sister).

I was also dissapointed that the game didn't force you to specialise more. I mean, you could use the machine gun ammo against anything, and with the exception of the camouflage plasmid there wasn't anything particularly fancy. I liked the research function to start with, there should have only been 2 or 3 tiers to reach, and many more varieties of enemies.

I applaud the use of an end boss, it has been far too long since I had a decent one, although the fact that I simply alternated between 3 weapons and 1 plasmid is kinda dissapointing.

That's interesting. Most of the people I've talked to felt that the end boss was horribly out of place in this particular game and would have liked to see something less game-y and more in keeping with the established atmosphere.

Me, I just found it ridiculously easy. Electric gel is pure cheese-in-a-canister.

Man, I love that review! :D It does seem accurate. Still seemed fun to play, even so.

I dreamed that I was watching that baby eating part again.
