First off, the red 'tar' is called the Awakened Mud (or just Mud). It's one of the three types of tarstuff in DROD, and works quite a bit differently from the Living Tar.

×Tar and mud babies prefer to move vertically rather than diagonally. This makes a U shape more useful than, say, a C shape.
