It's kind of a wierd way of inspiration when your brain feels like wet concrete. But it works for me, so... :?
What I did was, I took 40-50 index cards, and wrote the name of one element or monster on each one. I also drew a little picture on each. Whenever I'm stuck on ideas for a room, I draw 2 or 3 cards and make a room based on those elements. Usually it's a challenge, like... "How do I make a room about gel and force arrows?!" and thinking of that helps stimulate my brain and gets the old architecture going. :thumbsup

Useful idea. Perhaps a quick website script of some kind?

Click a button, and it gives you three random elements to include in a puzzle, with an optional constraint.

e.g. a sample result of...

You must make a room using
Rock golems
Orthogonal Tiles
Adders


With the possible use of
Invisibility during part of the room

Where constraints are things like "timing" "musn't be seen" "Hot tiles" "no sword"

Actually, as a matter of fact... :D
I just used py2exe and made a build of version 0.1. It has (pretty much) all the AE stuff in it, and you can specify the number of rooms. But I haven't done any constraints yet...
No, scratch that, I just did .02. It has a bunch of constraits and all the elements I can think of off the top of my head. (except speed potions) I just remembered I have to put those in. Oh well, save it for v03, I guess...

You'd have to go into more detail.

For example, for plain red Serpents, there could be several possible sub-themes.

1) Manipulating a serpent into a trap while avoiding other enemies
2) Keeping a serpent alive by manipulating doors
3) Killing a serpent by using an unusual element, e.g. just a wubba
4) Using a serpent as a timing device to limit the number of moves you can make
5) Using a serpent as a flow control device

And have the generator produce one of these instead of just "red serpent"

So you could have a sample output of...

1) Keep a serpent alive while manipulating doors
2) Roach queens behind force arrows to produce hassling roaches
3) Trapdoors

With added constraint of

Room must be solved within a certain time, or tar blocks a path

Those are just samples, but if we created a series of possible sub-puzzles, and used them... they could conform to themes. You could have checkboxes to do that, e.g. "Only include the following elements in suggestions"

Uh, you're a lot more creative about stuff like that than I am...
But what would be REALLY cool would be if we could mod it into the DROD game itself, so you could click to make an idea for a room.

There's really no need for that... or it could be a prize for killing more than 200 roaches, 100 evil eyes, 59 wraithwings and a spider on the title screen. In one sitting :lol .

I'd like to thank the creator of this thread - this idea set works! I printed out the names of several drod elements on bits of paper, picked some at random to see what came up.

I got "Hot Tiles", "Mud" and "Gel". This lead to a room with a fight vs tarstuff on a mostly hot-tiled landscape.

Then I tried again, getting "Adder" "Oremites" "Mimic". This lead to another room where you are swordless, but your mimic is not... but there are oremites, confusing the mimic orientation, and you must use it to battle adders.

The system works! I've almost done the first level of my hold thanks to it!

Hehe, thanks. I recently changed in C++ because VB2005 has a lack of DirectX tutorials/info.

Ya niether of those happen for me, must be only for the windows version.
Edit: yep, went on to a pc, downloaded it and that was happining to me as well
