Ahah!

I know that one. Stephen Fry's "The Hippopotamus".

I'm currently at work, so I'll post a new entry to this thread when I get home and have access to my books.
And to think it was sitting right next to my computer, waiting to be read. :(

OK, here's one for you all to guess.

It was thirst that awakened me.

And I knew at once where I was and what I was, too.

There were no sweet mortal dreams of chilled white wine or the fresh green grass beneath the apple treeas in my father's orchard.

In the narrow darkness of the stone coffin, I felt of my fangs with my fingers and found them dangerously long and keen as little knife blades.

More passages will be posted if it's not guessed.

If it's not "Interview with a Vampire" by Anne Rice, I'll be surprised.

It isn't, actually :) You're on the right kind of lines though.

(and the book you're thinking of is Interview with THE vampire, not A vampire. But it's still not the right answer)

Well, count me surprised. It's obviously Anne Rice from the writing style. Probably "The Vampire Lestat".

Beats me why she titled it "The Vampire" by the way. If my English serves, you can only get away with definite article when either it's already known which particular vampire it is, or it's the only vampire around. And neither is true, right?

I think she called it that because it sounded better. Either way, you're correct - it was "The Vampire Lestat". Have some points, a potato, and it's your go.

Ah, but it is known which vampire it is. It's the only one who's ever been interviewed.

"The mountains saw you and writhed. Torrents of water swept by; the deep roared and lifted its waves on high. Sun and moon stood still in the heavens at the glint of your flying arrows, at the lightning of your flashing spear."

The book is not originally in English by the way.

Oh... is it the Bible? *goes to look...* Yes. Although technically you've quoted from different books (Isaiah, Job, Habbakuk).

Anyway, time for me to find something...

EDIT: This might be too obscure (and slightly wrong as I'm going from memory), but I've always loved this book and it might well be the kind of thing people here know.

Erk. Forgot about this. And sadly I won't have access to the book for ages and Google isn't helping me... so I'll reveal that it is Noel Langley's The Land of Green Ginger.

I'll pass to anyone who has anything to put up (I'm lacking in books slightly here...)

That's the poem, you're next.
It's used in Agatha Christie's book, And Then There Were None.

The book was originally published under the title "Ten Little Niggers", in some editions it was changed to "Ten Little Indians" and then the American version was "And Then There Were None." That's what I was referring to. Good book by the way.

My quote should be easy enough:
"Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."

When I were a lad we had to grind "Lucky Jim" for summer homework.

True, but it was on a LIST of 4 nasty books and a jewel.
