Same rules as in the other two threads; I don't know how well this will work, given the ease of Googling the texts. But anyway:

"If they had stayed, if they had gone on and developed a real civilization - what would it have been like? Would rats, too, have shed their tails and learned to walk erect? Would they have made tools? Probably, though we thought not so soon and not so many; a rat has a set of natural tools that monkeys lack: sharp pointed teeth that never stop growing. Consider what the beavers can build with no tools but their rodent teeth."

Maybe instead of giving an exerpt, how about posting a hint, or a summary of the plot?

Well, although, I think tokyokid is right, I also think the answer is rats of nimh.

Yep.

As to clues, plot summaries would be ok, too, I suppose. I'm not sure what he means by a "hint", though.

If that's a submission, it has to be The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Apparently, from Soldier of Arete, by Gene Wolfe. This one was easy to Google...

Style looks a bit like Jack Vance...

OOps, I forgot to post a quote.

"You might as well open up now as later whatever you've got in mind. If this performance is supposed to be non-fiction, it's a flat bust. If it's supposed to be science-fiction, it isn't much better. If it's space-opera, even, you're violating all the fundamentals. I've written better stuff - Qadgop and Cynthia were a lot more convincing." He waited a moment, then went on:
"Who ever heard of the intrepid hero of a space-opera as big as this one started out to be getting stranded on a completely Earth-like planet and then have nothing happen? No action at all? How about a couple of indescribable monsters of superhuman strength and agility, for me to tear apart with my steel-thewed fingers?"
He glanced around expectantly. No monsters appeared.

Surely someone will have read this one.

Samkin and Arula sat on a bed facing Brother Hollyberry. The ancient healer and Keeper of the Infirmary leaned back in his armchair, chuckling dryly.
"Thank your lucky stars there wasn't a badger sitting in the chair today. By the fur! You two would have really found out what punishment was like. Those badgers were very, very strict!"
"Boi ecky, lucky fer us'ns, Brother. Oi 'spect 'ee badger'd choppen our tails off an' fling uz in 'ee pond!"

The name of the series would be fine, if you can't tell which book.

Really? That was the one I liked best as a kid. The badger should have given my memory a jog I guess.

Righto, try this one for size:

"In "Marooned", a two-part story occupying issues twenty-three and twenty-four of the book's run, we see Feingberg and Shea at their blood-freezing best. Unusual in that it is a one-character story narrated mostly in captions, "Marooned" tells the story of a young mariner whose vessel is wrecked by the Black Freighter befor eit can return to its hometown and warn it of the hell-ship's approach. Cast adrift on an uninhabited lisland with only his dead shipmates for company, we experience the frantic mariner's torment at the knowledge that while he is trapped on his island, the bestial crew of the Freighter are surely bearing down upon his town, his home, his wife and his children. Driven by his burning desire to avert this calamity, we see the mariner finally escape from the island by what may be one of the most striking and horrific devices thus far in pirate comic books:"

Um, it seems you have the name in there, unless that's a quote from the book (which it doesn't appear to be) so I'm gonna have to say Marooned.

silver got it, it is indeed Watchmen, which I'm reading at the moment having never gotten round to it for some reason. Was hoping that might last a little bit longer than that :P

I was really unsure when I posted -- it sounded like the comic-in-a-comic from Watchmen, but I couldn't remember if any of the text bits in Watchmen was a review of the comic-in-a-comic, and didn't remember the embedded story well enough for the review to nail it for me.

anyway: here's my entry. it's short, but those of you who know the book won't need anything else.

ok, pretty famous book:

"I found a little crowd of perhaps twenty people surrounding the huge hole in which the cylinder lay. I have already described the appearance of that colossal bulk, embedded in the ground. The turf and gravel about it seemed charred as if by a sudden explosion. No doubt its impact had caused a flash of fire. Henderson and Ogilvy were not there. I think they perceived that nothing was to be done for the present, and had gone away to breakfast at Henderson's house."

Google says this is from The Bourne Supremacy.

Let's try something moderately easy this time:

Lancelot's Joyous Gard was not a singularity in an age which has left us "Beaute", "Plaisance", or "Malvoisin" - the bad neighbor to its enemies - an age in which even an oaf like the imaginary Richard Coeur de Lion, who suffered from boils, could call his castle "Gaillard" and speak of it as "my beautiful one-year old daughter".
