Time to vote!

Remember to check through the rules, and to vote on how effectively the entrant showcases that one element, the overall quality of the hold, and how well a entry stays within the rules. Contestant, remember that you must vote your entry ten, and the others an appropriate amount.

Attached is a compilation of all the holds, in one nice handy zip. Remember to sort them in alphabetical order, so that they are in the same order as the poll.

Below is the entry that I erroneously omitted from listing.

The upside is by not playing more then the demo so far I have no idea how original your idea is, so they all look original to me.:D

09> Elemental Showcase The plumbing Entrance: Here's some general advice on stalwarts. They'll essentially move for the nearest monster and attack it, with a few nuances (a tendency to turn clockwise vs. counterclockwise, I believe). But they'll do so in something of a guard-like fashion: they won't go out of their way to hit orbs that'll get them closer (or to avoid orbs that will trap them), they won't use platforms or other technology, they'll happily move next to two monsters in order to kill one of them, even though that'll let the second monster kill them. Many stalwart-based puzzles involve guiding them correctly and, in some cases, keeping them from doing boneheaded and suicidal things.

(The entrance here--and many of the other rooms in this hold--are quite tricky, as it happens.)

I'm glad people are appreciating the hold.

I will eventually post my opinions of all my holds in a new post, which will reveal them when the poll is over. I will also vote at that time. However, I'm not done with all the holds.

I'd like to say I'm seeing some nice work done here. Great job, everyone. TCB did not by any means explore all of the puzzle potential inherent in the elements contained therein.

OK, voted. My thoughts are as follows.

An overall observation: some people took "showcase an element" to mean "the hold uses that element", and some took it to mean "the hold walks you through some uses of that element". I much preferred the former over the latter, though I can't fault people for taking that interpretation.

Also, seriously, people, set your holds anyone-edit. If I can't get past the first room and I can't see the hold in the editor, I'm not going to see much that I like.

Secreted for length (and because in some cases I give a room solution or two).

Well, I voted.

It will be interesting. I played as much as I could of all of the holds, which means that I was able to complete 15 holds outright, do most of a sixteenth, and couldn't get past the first or second room on the remaining five.

For those whose holds I couldn't get anywhere on, well, I gave low to middling ratings. Not that the holds are necessarily bad, but if you're trying to showcase an element, the difficulty level ought to be something that am average player can manage in not too much time.

All in all, though, there was a lot to like. A few submissions were excellent, several very good ones, and so on.

Josh

Well I voted. I was surprised by the voting.

It seemed low to me. Im not talking about mine but about the ones I really liked and actually everyones in general. I thought there would be a bigger spread.

I was glad so many entered but it was hard to get through all the holds in such a short time. I agree that anyone edit is the only way to go. I couldn't get through some rooms because I am don't do well with really hard one, but I could use the edit to play the others and see how the rest of the hold was. So even if the room was hard I could get the idea. Those that didn't have this just hurt themselves. :?

I took feature the element seriously, but I did like the tutorials as so many features I had no experince with. Some of you really showed the various and interesting ways your element could be used others just repeated the same idea a number of times.

Thanks everyone for all the hard work!

I voted. When I was playing through the holds I gave every hold 3 scores. One for the puzzles, one for design (rooms, story, texts, scripts) and one for how good it showcased the element. Using these 3 scores I made my votes. They ranged from 6 to 10.

My favourite holds were "Artful Escape" (9/10) and "Building and destorying" (10/10). I also liked "POPs" and "Showcasing Hot Tiles" very much (both 9/10). Those were the holds that completly focused on showcasing and explaining their element to the player. Often, simple puzzles, like those of "Artful Escape" were a lot more demonstrative than complex ones. The other holds were more or less (but good) puzzles collections with a certain team and got scores between 6/10 and 8/10.

Poll closed! (My thoughts now available up here.)

Two of the top three were holds I voted as 6/10, but I can understand people liking them. I will note the oddity that every hold but two of them have a "1" vote--a few have more than one, though those are holds where the voting tended to be lower. I do hope that those who voted "1" on things offer their thoughts, especially for those otherwise-well-regarded holds (e.g. nos. 1, 3, 6, 13, 15, 16--holds that otherwise had no votes under "4").

Ok, now that the contest's over, time to announce the winners.

In 3rd place for his hold, steam vents, is Architect veteran Doom. Well done on getting a exact 7 for your very well polished hold.

In 2nd place sits the hold Artful escape. Congratulations to its author Revan!

And in 1st place we have PoPS. Many congratulations are in order for voyager, a first time Architect and contestant. You've definitely got the touch.

In contrast to a couple of the previous posters, I didn't like the holds that explained what the element did. I already know what the elements do and the point on the contest - as I see it - is to demonstrate the puzzle potential of the elements.

Anyway, quite a few good holds here, my favourites were Lighthouse (bonus points for unexpected element) and Steam Vents (despite the hotplate competition). A room in Unexpected Vacation reminded me on a feature request I never made - a monster that can travel through walls and pits. Now we have one - it's called a wraithwing. :) )

My entry was The Beach (single-use pressure pads) Given infinite time, I was going to do a set of three holds, one for each sort of pad. And I did want to use pads in a way such that you couldn't replace them with other kinds of pads. That's one weakness of 1W - the pads don't need to be single use. :(

Stalwarts are my new least favourite element.

Congrads to everyone!

Tahnan wrote:
3. Burning Sands: 5/10

Some of the rooms were quite good, though that was a little uneven. 1N5E was interesting; 5E was doable without using the hot tile at all. I did like the use of scrolls to hint at secret room locations. However, what really turned me off to this hold was:

2N1E: don't tell me how good your room is; let me decide that. (Frankly, it wasn't as great as the scroll suggested.)
Okay, but that was just my option. Next time, I'll leave a scroll like that out.

2N2E: maybe the room is hard in the "intended" way, but it's pretty trivial the easy way. So seriously unimpressive, and once again, the scroll explaining how cool it is failed to impress me.
Yes, I know it's pretty easy. And once again, I'll leave the scroll out.

And of course, the author couldn't manage to spell the name of the hold correctly. That doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the care taken.
That's hilarious! :lol I have no excuse for spelling that wrong, so I'll just say: 'oops'!

Thanks for the constructive comments, Tahnan!

Darn, 4th place! ;)

I don't have complete comments, but I perticuarly liked The path, PoPS, Hells Kitchen and Artful Escape for their good combination of difficulty, tutorialism, fun and how well they suited the contest.

I'm glad most people liked mine too!

I'm too lazy (and can't remember enough) to comment on all holds, but I would like to state that I am very happy POPS won. And I had no idea The Path: The Entrance would be so difficult, as I just placed them there randomly, believeing it was impossible, and fell in awe when I passed it on my first try.

By the way: where's the next month's contest?

Fixed.

Or, just:

I'd love to see a demo.

Obviously, no demo was saved for that room because it lacked monsters, but I know how to do it. So, demo coming right up.

EDIT:

Here you go. The lynchpin is that the only way you can get through the gel formation at the west end is to start on a dark square. In order to make the gel near the dark square cuttable, you need to come in from the northern end.

The rest of the hold is pretty much just the same "determine which square is where you need to cut" and "how am I going to get there properly". Blech.

Ah, dang. I was afraid of that. Too bad I didn't catch it, I could have had Beethro gloat about it if you did it that way. Or, you know, fixed it.

Also: what do you know, once you posted the lynchpin about Trouble in the Basement 1 West, I went back and got it right away without watching the demo. Sorry Kevin, I take back my ignorant accusation.

Hey, we should keep this party going. Somebody post a demo to The Path: The Entrance!

Thanks for the more comments on my entry. Yes, 2N2E is really easy. And maybe next time, I could try harder to find and fix any unintended solutions. I won't go around making excuses, though, like: "Well, you see, I tried to fix it, but it was too hard".

And regarding the story: Chaco, I actually didn't think about monsters dieing on the tiles anyways. Maybe I should've mentioned on a scroll that monsters die on them because they think the tiles are hot. No excuses for that, either.

Well, overall, I now know why I didn't win. :) And I'll take this criticism and do better for the June contests.

Don't ask me, I warned Erik in May that I wouldn't be doing the June contest.
