I really haven't been following the story, and nearly always forget to read the level descriptions. :( I only came for the puzzles.

Hoo boy :? - I suggest you start a new game, give the first 5 or so minutes a good looking-at then restore to where you currently are...

Rain restarted play.

Restarting the game told me what I needed to know - thanks Briareos - and I'm now fumbling my way through Forgotten Ruins. At least until sun stops play again.
