If we have custom tiles for characters, what about having custom swords? That would be cool and add another bit of customization to the game.

It is here already.
When adding custom graphics, the rows go like that:
1st - Character GFX (While holding a sword if sword is)
2nd - Alternate Character GFX (The same as above too)
3rd - Sword GFX
4th - Graphic of a character when not holding the sword

For further info contact with Manual, about characters.

What happens if a person makes a hold with 2 Custom swords?

A-ha, but what if someone wanted to make a custom sword for, say, Beethro WITHOUT copyrighting anything, eg. Without using Print Screen and obtaining the Beethro graphics from that?

Hmm...you could make a new room style for your hold that only alters Beethro's sword graphic.

Wouldn't modifying official Styles be just as wrong as modifying sprites and stuff like that? :huh

not modify. just overwrite only part. with a .tim file, you can make a media that only overwrites specific tile types.

You said "Make a new style that only changes Beethro's sword graphic" wouldn't that be considered? I don't know, I'm getting confused by Caravel's policies.

you don't make a new style that changes only the sword.

you make a new style that includes nothing except a new sword.

hrm. I don't have a master .tim file for "generaltiles" yet. looking for one.

I want http://forum.caravelgames.com/viewsitepage.php?id=89551 expanded for TCB :)

not quite following you here, Mike. the B's sword is in GeneralTiles, not the room styles? how do I add GeneralTiles mods to a room/hold?

It's a new feature of TCB. You can create your own room styles and use them in your hold, and everyone will see them.

In 3.0, you can have a room style that selectively overrides certain tiles in generalTiles. For instance, City overrides the water bank tiles, so that they are shaped differently than in general, but otherwise everything is the same. (Everything else for the City style is actually located in GeneralTiles in 3.0.)

And, no, in 3.0 you no longer have to define all the tiles in a new room style. Anything that doesn't get defined uses City style tiles by default (except for the aforementioned customized water's edge tiles).

hrm. have the .tim numbers all changed up (rather than just adding new ones?)

so I made the attached purplesword.png,
and made a purplesword.tim which reads, simply, "48-55".

I put these in my "Bitmaps" folder.

I added ";purplesword" to the end of my "Style=" line in drod.ini

when I went to level editor (sample hold, plain room and such), I saw the "purplesword" style available, so I selected it. sure enough, it made the room look like City.

but B's sword was no different. even if I hit F5 to do a test run.

Try renaming your file to purpleswordTiles.png (case sensitive for Linux/Mac users). Remember to also add the line

"purplesword=purplesword" to your ini. (That's so you can have spacing or other non-filename chars in the style name -- this is the name to filename translation.)

It also conveniently allows you to override one style. So you could have "City=City;MyFunkyWall"

cool. I added purplesword=purplesword to drod.ini, and renamed both the .png and the .tim to purpleswordTiles (I tried it with just the .png, required I rename the .tim, too).

it worked! I had my really ugly purple sword (the point, though, was just to see if I could).

--- one issue, a couple questions ---

issue: I didn't have an "export" option for purplesword in the "manage styles" page.

question 1: if I made a hold using that style, would people who played it have a purple sword? (without getting/installing separate files).

question 2: what if the point was to have B have a purplesword in the whole hold, even if I wanted non-city styles?

issue: Beats me.

Question 1: No. It would use any purplesword style that there was in that hold. If they downloaded the style separately, then they would have it. I believe that once the CaravelNet style system is up (notice the download button), DROD will automatically fetch styles off of CaravelNet for holds you have downloaded.

Question 2: Then use the General entry in the .tim (you can't export a General modification, though)

well, given what you said, and since my question was "what if the point was to have B have a purplesword in the whole hold, even if I wanted non-city styles?"

then the answer is actually, "you can't. no one gets to make such a hold, unless they write a complete set of styles of their own from scratch," which seems like a weak answer. I'm sure we could do better.

changing "style" to be a multiselect would almost be enough. but then we'd still need to order it. but the idea is that if each room can have a "style" entry that looks like "purplesword" then each room's style entry should be able to look like "aboveground;purplesword" :)

For some reason, I thought this might work, but it doesn't.

same .png and .tim file as before (purpleswordTiles.*)

Style=Aboveground;City;Deep Spaces;Fortress;Foundation;Iceworks;purplesword;purpleAG
purplesword=purplesword
purpleAG=Aboveground;purplesword

selecting purplesword still works (city tiles, purple sword)
selecting purpleAG goes to Aboveground, but no purple sword.

purplesword=purplesword
purpleAG=purplesword;Aboveground

Mike explained to me in a PM how City ends up the default style, and its gross and hard to override so that you can put GeneralTiles mods over other styles. I'll try to fix it when he releases the source code for 3.0 (basically, there's a copy of City graphics IN the new GeneralTiles).

Eh? It's no harder to make generalTiles mods for 3.0 than it was for 2.0. No one has to include all the city tiles in a general tiles mod, after all. In fact, I'd recommend against it.

that's not what I was saying in the thread - the idea is to get GeneralTiles mods to work "against" other styles (i.e. to be able to change Beethro's sword and have it work in your whole hold, even though you use all 6 styles, instead of just in City).
